I am currently a SSgt in the AF and I am trying to convience my wife into me going through the "Blue to Green" program. I want to here the opinon of people actually in the Army rather then a recruiter. My wife is under the impression that no matter what job you have in the Army they are going to give me a gun and send me to the sandbox (not that I would mind that). If I crossed over I would like to become an MP.

There is nothing delightful about war and yes I do believe in the reason we are over there. I have been to Iraq (running convoys), Afghan, and a couple other stans.

Well, you said you've already been deployed, so chances are, you've worked around a LOT of Army and know more than you think you do.

But to answer you're question, what is the Army really like..

As for differences I think you'll find...

The Army is a harsher environment (at least where I am), so you'll have more freedom to correct Soldiers with physical training and making life suck for them. If you take the bottom 10% out of both the Army and Air Force, I think you will find that Soldiers are much more flexible and willing to work hard to accomplish the mission.

You'll be expected to lead, and be proactive to fix hard problems with less resources than you are used to, and to fix it NOW. Unlike the Air Force, the Army does not wait until Monday when something breaks down. Some of the stuff I've seen loadmasters do to keep from doing their job, like failing equipment on inspection so they won't have to load it on their aircraft, would be an undisputed Relief for Cause in the Army.

PT is daily, usually platoon level and above, and very regimented.

Leaders who don't know how to train Soldiers and can't physically keep up with the younger guys are weeded out and sent to BS jobs.

Promotion E1-E4 is much faster and easier in the Army. There are no written tests, your chain of command will fail you on the board if they have reason not to promote you. E7 and above is also centralized and very very competitive.

And yes if you become an MP you're probably deploying again soon.

I'm an Army wife of 18 years and I know what the risks are to my hubby, but I know what his job is too. He's been to the sandbox 3 times, so far. I'm glad you believe in your job and haven't let others affect that.

As a MP, you would be have to be ready to deploy. They're rotating them on a regular basis. I have nothing bad to say about the Army. It's been a good life....rough at times, but still good. You'll need the support of your wife though. A strong marriage is important. Do talk to a recruiter and see what can be offered to you. However, I think if you have an AF MOS that the Army needs, they probably won't let you change. Only the recruiter can tell you that though. Try to pick and MOS that is marketable after you get out of the military though. You'll be glad you did. I'm not sure what kind of info you want. You do alot of marching, but I'm sure you know that. I don't believe that the Army is the killing machine that people make them out to be. It's part of the training every branch in the military has. Army is just put into alot of action....it's what they do.

Good luck with whatever choice you make. Thank you for what you do for our country and what you plan on doing.

Well, your wife is right, in a way. If you join the army, you will be handed a weapon and have to use it. That is the military. And with the war right now, you will be going to the sandbox at some point, til we pull out. And as an MP, that is one of the most highly deployed MOSs. But all army personnel pretty much will be doing a rotation overseas. But the other branches are just as likely to make all their personnel ship overseas. So if your wife doesn't want you to deploy overseas, then she should not want you in the military at all, not just Army.

The army has its advantages and disadvantages, just like all the other branches, it just depends on your personality if it is for you. I tease my Air Force friends and call them wingnut weenies, because physically, their jobs are ssooooo easy, although probably require a lot more brains than most of my jobs. Marines I tease with brainless grunt, all they gotta do is be able to stop a bullet with their teeth, but don't need brains (I would love to be able to join the Marines, but I am no where near hardcore enough). I got a friend that left the Marine Corp and transfered to the Army, he is having a bit of trouble with it because he is a Marine at heart, but I love the fact that he will be bringing disipline to his troops. If deploying is something that you don't mind, then it sounds like you might fit in just fine. It can be rough, especially if you wind up in a unit that deploys a lot, but it can be a wonderful experience, as well.

I have been active component before, been an Army Wife for six almost seven years (and the army had nothing to do with my divorce), and am now back on active duty through the active gaurd reserve program. I love it, even though it is rough at times. I love taking care of my soldiers, and knowing that I am making a difference in a way that a lot of people can't or won't.

If you join the Army through Blue to Green, unless the policy changed since I last read it, if you already have an MOS we need, you will not be allowed to change jobs. You will only get to change if you have a job we don't need.

Sergeant,

It's highly likely that you'll be deployed to a combat theater at some point during your career in the Army--especially as an MP, which is classified as a combat support MOS.

Yeah real! military is supportive of the soldier and the kinfolk earlier and after the army. All protection stress does. some in simple terms have undesirable reports and dont prefer to blame themselves. what they "might desire to have carried out" is carried out slightly diagnosis and then joined despite they needed. no one compelled them in. Its a similar everywhere like all different activity, take care of people the way you go with to be taken care of. If youre a P.O.S. then you definitely gets taken care of that way. in case you're wonderful, you will get a similar in return.

the army is like a big dumb animal that moves slow and makes a lot of noise.....it takes the army forever to get anywhere and the enemy always knows when its coming and therefore gets away with more....

the marines on the other hand..... they are a tiny force of men that strike fast and move quick and silently and have only one mission in their minds...."kill".

Bro i'm not American but i advice you to fight only if you are 100% sure about the reasons of your war. You would be more useful around your wife.

Don't take war lightly.I saw a lot of people losing husbands, sons. Or worse (without legs, arms). Please value your life.
