Yes....I ate soup from there many times.
I work on 54th Street and 7th Avenue. As someone said, the Intenational Soup Kitchen is on 55th and 8th. I thought it was on 56th...but it could be 55th....its either 55 or 56th Street, just off 8th Ave.
We used to go there about once a week, before the Seinfeld episode. After the TV show, the line was so long (around the block) we didn't go back.
So I can describe it pre Seinfeld.
First off, there was no "shop". It was merely a counter on the side of a building. No seats no inside.
You lined up. There was a chalk board with the list of soups for the day. They were really really good but expensive. A small soup was $7 or more....which is really expensive even in NY.
You gave your order and paid. You stepped down and he gave you a bag with your soup, a piece of bread and a piece of fruit.
He did not answer questions. I once asked for an apple instead of an orange he said NO.
I never saw him refuse anyone, but if you didn't know what you wanted when you got up to him he would say "NEXT". I don't remember if people went to the back of hte line.
I do not remember him saying "NO Soup for YOU!"
The Seinfeld show was accurate with regard to his demeanor and the exact procedure for ordering the soup.
I might add, the soup was excellent.
The shop was open from the fall to spring and closed all summer. However, I have not seen the shop open for a couple of years.

Just to add to what has already been written - there are actually a couple of them now in the city. There's one that is on the upper east side on 3rd or 2nd Ave in the low 80s or high 70s. You can also find his soups in some supermarkets now in prepackaged and sealed bags.
My one experience with the owner was at the first store(more like stand) in midtown on the west side about 8 years ago. They had painted footprints on the sidewalk as to where you were supposed to stand. Apparently I didn't go as fast as he wanted from the ordering part to the picking up the soup part - he glared at me and waved his finger at me to move to the left.
The soup is expensive but pretty good - soups are full of solid stuff and rather filling. Comes with bread, a fruit and used to include a piece of chocolate as well.

it is on 55th near the corner of 8th. it's not closed down- it's just that it's only open in the winter. the guy looks a lot like the character on seinfeld- and he's a very serious guy but he's not that mean. the soup really is unbelievably good- the lobster bisque, shrimp bisque and muligtawny (sp?) are the best I think. it's expensive- more like $10 to $15 a soup but they are very hearty, plus it comes with a surpringly large amount of fruit, bread and chocalate. there are others now in the chain but they ain't anywhere near as good.

The original store no longer exits, he has turned it into a nationwide chain called The Soup Man. However, around the time he was featured on Seinfeld, I went to the original, and it was just like the show. Some of the people I went with giggled when they placed their orders, and they got no bread. I ordered properly, so I got bread and chocolate.

Actually, to my knowledge, and according to my sister, a New Yorker for twenty years, it does exist. It is somewhere on the very West of Manhattan (10th Ave?), somewhat mid-town. Apparently the guy is gruff, and he did not like the Seinfeld show referring to him as a nazi, albeit "the soup nazi," and despite the business it brought him.
