The usual med for pre-op antibiotic prophylaxis is amoxicillin. I have two drug references at hand and they both say that amoxicillin is safe to use while nursing. "Safe: Substantial human data demonstrates no risk/minimal risk to infant/breast milk or medication not orally bioavailable to infant; medication usually compatible with breastfeeding." If you have concerns, ask your pediatrician rather than your dentist.

Why should you take any antibiotic on a simple dentist checkup??

If there's nothing urgent that definitely needs some antibiotic, then have the checkup done but no further treatment than cleaning or anything possible without antibiotic.

I'm going to assume you will be taking some form of penicillin before your appointment because of a health condition you have. You will probably be taking just one dose of the medication just before your appointment. With penicillin, small amounts can be excreted in breastmilk, but I do not think you will be taking enough of the antibiotic for it to cause harm to the baby.

If you are worried, perhaps you should call your baby's doctor to make sure this isn't a problem. Or you could possibly call your dentist and have them prescribe an antibiotic that is safest during breastfeeding.

some do so you need to check with your pediatrician or Dr or even ask the dentist. see the label and ask about all possible side affects. if you have to pump your milk to keep the flow going and dump it out feed the baby formula for the duration of the antibiotics. they say you can feed with surenges so their isn't any nipple confusion.

Call a pharmacist (local Wal-Mart, wherever...)
Tell them what antibiotic it is
tell them you're pregnant
ask if it is OK.
They can tell you the quickest and most sound advice.

I'd ask your doctor. I know antibotics can make you get pregnant faster.
