I am a us citizen wanting to stay in a country for an extended amount of time (as a main residence) without the hassle of renewing my right to be there...

You do not have to renounce US citizenship in order to become a citizen of another country, unless their laws specifically say so. Here is a very nice web site that is pretty accurate about multiple citizenship:

Depending on the country, you would need to contact their consulate and request to request a visa and explain to them that you would like to stay for an extended amount of time. Obtaining another countries citizenship might be a problem because the US does not allow its citizens dual-citizenship.

well first you'll have to renounce your american citizenship, at which point i say good riddance to ya. but aside from that go to the nearest govt building in the nation you are in ask them for information and forms to become a citizen. (you'll find it's harder to become a citizen in another country than it is for them to become a citizen in our country, also i hope you can speak the native language.)
