It takes 3 - 4 years of college. You actually don't need a degree as long as you have all the dental school prerequisites. Dental school is then 4 years. If you choose to specialize, that would be another 2 - 4 years depending on what you want to do. Also, some states now require a year long residency program in a school or hospital.
Some Dental schools also have agreements with some universities for 7 year combined undergrad/dental school.
Since dental prerequisites are very science heavy, a science major would be your best bet. However, I went to dental school with some english majors.
That other answer about dentists average lifespan is ridiculous. It is true that dentist have a high suicide rate, you just need to know how to handle life and stress. Dentistry is a great and very rewarding profession.

the_nothing is "quoting" a popular misconception about dentists and suicide and life-span. Jeez.
The other answers give good information.
I found that a biology major was best for me. First of all, I was actually interested in the subject matter. Second of all, the requirements for the bio major most closely matched the entrance requirements for dental school, so I wasn't scrambling trying to finish up my major and also meeting entrance requirements. I actually had some flexibility in choosing electives that I was also interested in.

you certainly would desire to chat to the school placement officer or counselor. Theyre activity is to appreciate those issues. Youre precise tho there is not any such factor as pre-dental. Prob terrific to take pre-med stuff like A&P, biology, chemistry, medical terminology, possibly even a direction for drugs and their area outcomes, utilization, and contrarindications. something in the sciences.

I'm not telling you what to be but...
Dentists have the highest suicide rate of any profession...
Also the average age at which dentists die naturally is 54. Its because of all the chemicals they inhale while fixing up your teeth.
