No, I suffered from clinical depression for years before treatment and had positive thoughts as well as negative. Clinical depression is about much, much more than just negative thinking. During my stay in a mental hospital, I met many others with clinical depression. We all spent a lot of time time talking and telling jokes, they were some of the funniest people I ever met. Many of them were actively suicidal and some were later sucessful, but they were capable of occasional positive thoughts.
Regarding the answer which mentions severe highs and lows, however, that sounds a lot more like the description for bipolar disorder, which is a different illness with very different treatments.

of coarse not, problem is they allow the nagative to rule their lives, at leat that has always been my understanding
also you should be aware that an increasing number of poeple are seeking help for depression when what they really have is nothing more than a hitting on some rough times
depression of your current situation and clinical depression are not quite the same. one is temporary meds and of coarse the other longer term meds....both curable thank god

No not always, usually they have severe Highs, where their almost floating and everything is brilliant ( and do things like extreem spending, drinking, partying or gambling) and then they just crash into a major low .....there doesnt seem to be a middle ground, it always super high or super low.

besides negative thoughts, depressed people do not have sufficient oxygenation (low heart rate combined with low blood pressure and low oxygen saturation)

Only when they are in their depression.
But, it isn't always "negative" just hopeless.. pointless... powerless.
"negative" people are pessimists and may live perfectly happy lives being negative... like Dr. House.
