I'm doing a fall harvest theme with real pumpkins as centerpieces. My wedding is October, Friday the 13th.... :)
I want to know if I purchase the pumpkins the weekend before the wedding will they keep? I want time to clean them up and the pumpkin farms aren't open when I get off work in the evening.

So, whats the best way to keep them cool and away from insects for the week then?

Store pumpkins in a cool dry place. Put the fruits on a single layer on wooden pallets with space in between the fruits (the fruits should not touch each other); do not place them on a concrete floor. Improve air circulation within the storage area by letting in cool air at night and use fans to circulate air during the day. Do not let in warm air from outside during the daytime. The optimal storage condition is 50-55°F, with a relative humidity of 50-70%. Under these conditions you can keep the fruits for about 2-3 months. Store the fruits away from apples because apples produce ethylene gas as they ripen, and ethylene speeds the ripening process in pumpkins and decreases their shelf life. Keeping relative humidity within the 50 to 70 percent range is important, because very high humidity leads to settling of moisture on fruit surfaces, which increases decay of the fruit. Low relative humidity may cause dehydration of the fruit.

I was in a fall wedding and we bought the pumpkins 5 days before. They last for quite some time and do not need to be refrigerated (but don't leave them sitting in the sun, either). You can also buy other fall vegetables to decorate (mini pumpkins, striped squash, etc.). If you have a Farmer's Market near you, you can find a good deal on the pumpkins and baskets of the "decorative vegetables".

Some other ideas:

We found silk leaves in fall colors at a Dollar Tree store ($1 per package with about 20 leaves per package. Those were scattered on the tables before the centerpieces were added.

The ceremony and reception were held at a renovated mansion (now a wedding/event center). On the sidewalk and steps outside, we alternated pumpkins (whole, not carved) and gold bags (I think they have sand or something to weight them down?) you put candles in. It illiuminated the walkway to the entrance. It looked beautiful from the street.

Good luck with your wedding and best wishes!

They will be alright. If you cut them open then they will rot. You don't want a stinky pumpkin on the table with food (blah). I think it is cool to have a Friday 13th wedding with a harvest theme. Best of wishes.

hi and congratulations on your upcoming wedding ceremony! i like the coastline every time! it is not significant that it is going to likely be fall. the only factor.....you assert it's going to be mid October and you like your reception to initiate approximately 5-6 p.m. it is solid, yet there is not any longer plenty daylight hours (if any in any respect) at that factor. I stay the furthest west in the eastern Time Zone and it would be getting dark right here in mid October at approximately 6 p.m., so i might think of in New England you would be some million hour before - so it's going to be getting dark at 5 p.m.? i do no longer understand if that concerns to you or no longer, or possibly there are lighting fixtures on the deck/patio exterior? after all, in case you adore the room.....i might get it!

They'll keep but keep them cool and naturally they will mold and spoil quicker if their carved into. A week should be fine. BTW, that's a great day to get married on. Congrats!

I agree with everyone else. I usually buy mine too a couple weeks before I carve them and they are just fine. Congrats on your wedding, I am partial to the date though, it is my birthday. Have lots of fun.

I usually buy mine a few weeks before Halloween and don't carve them until a couple of days before. They should keep just fine as long as they are still intact.

They'll keep if you keep them in a cool place, like a basement. Good luck!
