Why does my cat keep trying cover her food?

They are instinctively trying to cover the odor of their food.Most cats will do this because they are trying to hide the food from other animals.My kitten did this when she started on real food.It is cute but they soon discover the food will be there when they come back.

I have a cat who does this; its just something some cats do- it is thought they are hiding their food from predators, in the same way they cover their excrement so they cannot be traced by their enemies.

My cat tries to cover his food when he is either tired if it or he just doesn't like it at all.

mine does this too while the other cat just looks on as if to say yeah great job doofer but we share the dish so move off

My cat does that too and I think she is either marking it as hers or thinking that she is burying to so no other animal can come eat it

She is trying to "bury it for safe keeping." It's an instinct from her ancestors who hide their food from other predators until they can come back for it. It is completely normal and you don't need to worry about it.

it could be part of her hunting instincts many animals in the wild who hunt for food will try to hide there kill to save for later

obviously she was a food critic in another lifetime....one of my four does the same thing...until i offer her something that meets her elevated standards of feline cuisine!
