It's diffcult to get your mind around because it requires understanding something beyond us but I'll use an anolgy that helps me.
If you are watching a movie, the characters in that movie are "trapped" in a specific time line you are outside of that time line so you can jump to the end of the movie and stop and start the movie.
Similary God is outside of a "real" time. He created time so he is byond time. unlike the movie which was created by people within another time line "real" time. God is not in any time line, someone or something has to have exisisted beyond time or else time could not have come into existance.
And if God does exist beyond time then he never started it is eternal. Thus the reason bible does not explain where he came from. He is the source of all existance, everything can be traced back to him.

For a long time He was not God!
The being (The I am THE I am) existed forever.
It was not tell he began the creation that he became God.
Go back in time long before the BIG BANG.
You have the void, and you have a quantity of energy in the void.
Energy can not be created or destroyed it can only be changed into matter and matter back into energy

God is, was and always has been, Alpha and Omega.
He is the beginning of everything - it is one of those things (and there are a few others) we have to take on faith. He knows all that has been and that will be - and it is FAR beyond the ability of our abilities to understand. Again - if we believe, then we have faith.
