The Catholic Church says that Christ promised his Holy Spirit to guide the Church into ALL TRUTH. That is, the teaching magisterium (The bishops, in union with the Pope). All the writings of the early Church Fathers echo this. There was never any dissent.

Now, 1600 years later, along come the protestants, who want to make up their own religions. They claim that what Christ MEANT was that he was sending his Spirit to guide ALL BELIEVERS into all truth. And yet, we have thousands of different factions all claiming that their interpretation of the Bible is the correct one and new factions starting up daily when someone doesn't like a particular doctrine and wants to start his own church.

Q: Can all this confusion possibly be authored by the Holy Spirit?

Scriptures say something to the effect that "God is not the author of confusion" and therefore the answer would be no.

Truth is truth, it's when men try to iterject their own is when it becomes clouded and ceases to be true.
There are all kinds of Catholic denominations and factions as well, does that mean that all Catholics are wrong? Probably not.
There are various different denominations because there are many different "styles" of worship and questions of irrelevance such as when the rapture will take place or where to place emphasis on the gifts of the Spirit. It's when people place undo emphasis on an aspect of their relationship to God that ugly factions arise. This is usually a result of something that glorifies man and takes the glory away from God.
Most Bible believing churches are not apposed to one another, they see each other as brothers in Christ with questions that will remain until we see Him face to face. It's when you usurp the authority of God and place men in His stead that you seperate yourselves from the truth and the truth is not in you.

You can give just about any book to a bunch of different people and you will hear a bunch of interpretations. It only shows the book was written by man. If it were of some higher power there would be much more agreements about it, don't you think? I think if a supreme power was going to write a book to communicate with people he would make it unmistakable, where no room for interpretation would be needed, or if it was everyone who read it would agree on it, that would truly be a sign from god.
