too complex to describe with a word or a sentence. we are our own worst enemies but on the other hand there is no-one and nothing else like us. at the same time that we are selfish we are generous, altruistic, intelligent, funny, and probably a huge anomaly in the universe. it is not enough to say we are warlike - ants wage war, so do some other species; chimpanzees also murder; the 'natural order' is actually reducible to the phrase: EAT OR BE EATEN - what can be more selfish than that?
certainly we have always had the creeps, the wastrels, the insane. but when you stack them up against what the rest of us have accomplished you will see that we as a species are much, much better than we tend to think when something gets us down.

the list IS endless. don't try to tell me - or yourself - that the equation of all of those who have contributed to the advancement, enlightenment, understanding and/or amusement of our species falls down against those of us who have been criminals, insane, etc. we are still in the moment - still evolving, and no matter how stupid or ridiculous or outright bad some of us are, the good will always outweigh the bad, for the simple reason that there are more of us - the good - versus them.
as for the other parts of your question, let's not be denigrating when discussing attributes such as "breeding". it is true that there are many, many problems. some seem insurmountable. some will require discipline and a hard focus on the job at hand in order to get done some of the tasks we never used to think about.
but we are recycling; we are thinking about - and, more importantly, talking about - some of these very real and urgent problems. when we begin to think and talk about anything, we usually end up doing something. i think that we are now at a point where, with the persistence of media and the global reach of the internet, more of us are exposed to questions about our future, more of us are thinking about it, and more of us will contribute meaningful suggestions to the world-wide dialogue. (well, perhaps we are not just yet at that point, but we will get there).
in the meantime, we are entitled to spend a bit of time in pointless entertainment such as 'what's up with tomkat's baby' or 'do you think these orange-yellow-and-green polkadot tights will go with my purple and puce jumper?'

The best way to describe humanity is how you discipline yourself as an individual and what are the good deeds you contribute to our environment.
