I've decided that fiction needs cool names, like the Odyssey and the Illiad. We should come up with some better ones for the bible...

Because the New Testament is not a revised version of the Old Testament! It a different collection of books altogether.
You should learn some more about it, it's really very entertaining and bizarre!

Testament means covenant or agreement. The Old Testament refers to the covenant God made with the Israelite at Mount Sinai. Exodus 20. The New Testament is a reference to Jeremiah 31:31 which Christians see as being fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament to me, is more like an anthology, that tracks man's success, and failure through the ages. Rather than present the New Testament as a new chapter in that anthology, church scolars seem to have presented it as an open ended epilogue.
I have also heard the former called 'God's Last Will and Testament to the Flesh', and the latter, 'Christ's Last Will and Testament to the Spirit'.
In any case, they both seem to be about contracts, or covenants.

To all the people spouting this "covenant" crap: Your theology came about hundreds and hundreds of years after the Old and New Testaments received their names. The canon was finalized in the 4th century C.E., which puts it approximately 1500 years earlier than your "covenant" theology. Therefore, your theology is *not* a cause for the names being given.
And yes, it's because the New Testament is a different collection of books.

Old testament is from the time Jesus was alive. New testament is from after his death.
Your thinking of the King James Version, ie: Revised to suite the King.

Because the Old Testament is the Book of the Law and the Prophets (Hebrew and Aramaic texts), and the New Testament is the book about the Fufillment of the Law, and the Prophets and the Life and Ministry of Jesus Christ (Greek texts).
If you are feeling as if the two books contradict each other, you need to look into it as it is and definitely not according to human-made doctrines, and you will see how harmonious it is from beginning to end. :)

Testament is another word for covenant. The old covenant was solely for the Jews while the new covenant was intended for the whole world. The old covenant with the Jews is not yet completed which is why the new one will be removed from the earth (the rapture) and the final seven years predicted in Daniel will be the conclusion of the old covenant after which, earth will be returned to its Eden like condition.

The Old Testament was instructions from God on how to live life in order for that period of time.
When Jesus came the clock hour of God changed and brought a new period (New Testament). This New Testament gives us instructions how to live life. People changed and needed new instructions on how to live their lives for God.
The Next Testament will be written when this time is over and Jesus returns to earth for the millenium ruling.

Because they are not revised. The Old Testament foretells, and the New Testament fullfills. Don't question it, just read it, and then maybe you will be able to ask an intelligent question.
