The most important function of a school is to prepare students to become productive citizens that contribute to society. Uniforms are part of many jobs and most of us have worked a job that required a uniform whether it was in a restaurant , as a store clerk, the military, or even playing collegiate sports. When one wears a uniform it says to others "I have a job to do." Students have a job--to learn. Though it may seem like an attack on individuality, there are much more important aspects of a person other than their clothing. Uniforms level the playing field so kids have to dig a little deeper when choosing friends. As a teacher, I can tell you that it is a good day when kids are judged by their character rather than their Air Force Ones.

Well, I'm against it, but I do see the equality of it. The good thing good about it is you don't have be made fun of if you don't have the best clothes, or the must expensive or the coolest; everyone is equal. Then later no one has to say they don't have anything to wear and hold things up. Then no one has a label also (like prep, goth, punk etc). So no one can get harassed because they look different. And most of the time, it's cheaper.

The thing against it is that no one can be an individual. They can't express themselves in some ways with uniforms. The halls would be bland without any color but the uniform (black and white type) or the school color and not everyone wants to show up like that and/or be a walking advertisement for their school (I would hate that, being a walking ad for a snotty school like mine, and we don't have uniforms). But the thing that gets me the most, is that most schools I've seen with uniforms, don't allow girls to wear pants! It's like we're back in the 50's and feeling like it's immoral to wear pants just to be equal to men.

As a former student and current teacher, I think uniforms are great. I'm not a morning person, and anything to help me be a little lazier in the morning is a plus! I understand the students' point of view of wanting to express personal fashions/ideas. I think there has to be a good compromise between the two.

as a parent i think that its a great idea....as a former student i didn't like it at the time but now i am glad that we had to wear uniforms...i think that its a lot better specially if you have boys (i have one) because that way they don't worry {at least while in school} about wearing the wrong color...fights are caused over the stupidest things...go to school to learn not to see the latest trends or to pick a fight because so and so is wearing blue or red. like i said, i agree and should be mandatory

The first problem that comes to my mind is peer-pressure. There are a lot of children that are less fortunate than others. The idea of school uniforms is relieving for just about every parent and does not single out any child.

When we lived in Texas my children had to wear uniforms and they hated it. I did as well. I feel it takes away from a child's individuality. They argued that it makes it easier for kids to learn. I can "maybe" agree if the school sits in an area where rich and poor kids attend, but where my kids were attending was a posh suburb of Dallas. No one there was poor. We have since moved to Chicago and they can wear their own clothes in styles they chose. They are much happier. I feel why should my kids be deprived just because someone else's parents cannot afford to give them what I can afford to give mine?

As a parent myself I think uniforms are a waste of good money...think about it you have to buy uniforms and then turn around and buy play clothes, and my son wears Rocawear and Ecko and Sean Jean. And yes it is my decision to buy the name brand because that's what i wear so he too will wear the same things. Last years school clothes make great play gear.

As a parent, I think it's a great idea. No more time spent in the mornings with the nothing to wear blues. Also, it is needed most in high schools because it elimitates the ability to wear gang-related clothing and kids shunning other kids because they cannot afford or are not allowed to buy the newest styles.

I hate the idea of cookie-cutter kids. They all look the same and have no way to express themselves. Of course, they'll hate all looking the same which will cause them to rebel in other ways. I think it's wrong. A dress code is one thing, but uniforms are for the army and policemen etc.
