The standard for the breed is an intact tail. So, I won't dock the tails.

The only advantage to the tail dock is it completely eliminates the chance that your pups will be used in dog fights in the future.

At 3 days old, no younger and it gets worse if they are older, I use the 2 hemostat method. Produces a good result.

1) Detemine length desired
2) Lift tail skin slightly & clamp across tail firmly with clean, disinfected hemostats. As tight as possible.
3) Place second pair of hemostats slightly below first, clamp very firmly.
4) While holding first pair in place, twist second pair until tail comes off.

There is very little blood loss with this method and tail stump looks natural when healed. There is a lot of screaming involved in all tail dockings so, remove mother dog from area.

I personally have a hard time doing this and will generally pay to have it done. Call around, this is generally not that expensive to have a vet do it.

ps - the tail is used in a dog fight as a handle to retrieve the dog.

Tails are not used for a handle in a dog match. Dogs without a tail; never seen one in a match. I`m not here to help you through life but do some reading before blurting out a false statement you know nothing about. Now to the question at hand. Some hours ago you were tying rubberbands on their tails and now you are still trying to play around!! Leave the tails alone, you don`t mess with something like that. People, don`t be moronic and give this person any ideas!!

If it is done by an experienced vet at the right age of the dog, I see nothing wrong with it. Its when people do it at home that it becomes cruel. Or when people get a dog and want its tail docked later. A tail should be docked within days of birth. Anything later and the bones have developed, requiring it to be a surgical procedure. there is no other late docking procedure that is not cruel. Cropping ears should be done within a certain age period before the ears set. It should be done by a professional and experienced vet. When done properly, it heals painlessly and looks nice. They even do the procedure with laser now, reducing the healing time by cauterizing the incision.

Cutting a pit bulls tail off? What the hell are you talking about? Why would you cut a pit bull's tail off? They'll look absolutely stupid if you do that, and I've never in my entire life seen a pit bull with a docked tail. That's not the breed-standard for them. Pit bulls don't get their tails cut off, just boxers, dobermans, rottwielers, shar peis, bulldogs, and other breeds, but NEVER a pit bull's. I own 5 pit bulls myself. I think you're mistaken, you want their ears cropped, not their tails. People will not buy your pit bull puppies if you have their tails cut. They'll probably think the pups aren't purebred pit bulls, and I'm sure they'll ask you why in the world you would get their tails cut, when it's unheard of for this breed. You're most-likely illiterate on this breed, no offence. Alot of people are. And trying to cut their tails off yourself is considered animal cruelty.

for a pitbull breeder where did you hear to cut off their tails? pits always have their tails and the ones you see without their tails are fighting dogs and i hope you don't want to fight this dog? if a vet does this he is wrong and your dog has to be a puppy or something wrong with its tail to do something like this.if you want to sell them and make sure they get a good home leave them as they are

You may or may not agree w/ this statement...

Cropping of the ears and docking of tails is mutilation no matter what you want to call it. It's only accepted in the U.S. and only by a handful of people (working dogs - cattle and sheep dogs). In Kennel Clubs world wide, it's considered mutilation, please reconsider.

I have a Pitt and she's beautiful with ears and tail!

Grace to you and God Bless!

Don't do it unless you can have a vet do it. trying it yourself can kill the pups. Pits are ugly with out tails anyway

um, then dont get them done, you have to stitch up the tail (i got mine done at a vet) and you should take yours to a vet as well or you are going to kill them from either the blood loss or the infection.
