this is the 4th day and the dog is ok and very friendly, she seems to be even nicer now that she has the rubberband on. my friends say i should leave it on and some others are saying I should go to the vet... I don't have alot of money and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good antiseptics or anti bacterial creams for the tail after I pull it off? and when is it safe to pull it off, or does it just fall off on its own? if you are here to bad mouth me then please don't bother answering, I only want serious answers please

I don't get why you put a rubberband around her tail. You should go to a pet store and they'll have some cream or something for it.

First of all how old is the pup? Doing this this way is painful and there is risk of infection. I have known people 2 do it this way and the pup ended up fine and no infection occured, but they werent over 1 week old when this was done. Docking puppies tails like this is no differant than farmers docking sheep tails the same way and banding their testicles as this is the way that farm vets do also. A matter of fact there are vets in my area that use the band to neuter dogs also.(This is no lie)
My point is no matter which way it is done it is painful to the animal, but it is much more safer to let a vet do it. How long has the band been on? If not that long then cut it off, but a couple hours the tail is prob. dead, because of no circulation best see vet. No matter what the decision is, do not pull the tail off it will fall off when ready, and put triple antibiotic ointment on it right away.
I trust u will do the right thing for ur pup i hope.
People are right about this it is illegal 2 dock your own dogs tails, a matter of fact, they are trying to pass it where a dogs tail and ears cannot be docked or cropped.
It is considered animal abuse, and doing it yourself makes it more abusive.

This is why!!! Advocates of tail docking claim that it does not cause pain or discomfort, as the nervous system of puppies is not fully developed. This is not the case. The basic nervous system of a dog is fully developed at birth and the available evidence indicates that puppies have similar, if not increased, sensitivity to pain as adult dogs. Docking a puppy's tail involves cutting through muscles, tendons, up to seven pairs of highly sensitive nerves and severing bone and cartilage connections. Tail docking is usually carried out without any anaesthesia. Puppies give repeated intense shrieking vocalisations the moment the tail is cut off and during stitching of the wound, indicating that they experience substantial pain. Inflammation and damage to the tissues also cause ongoing pain while the wound heals. Tail docking is now BANNED in MANY countries,it is a very cruel practice. How would YOU feel if someone put a band so tight around YOUR arm or leg and left YOU till your limb dropped off? Do you think it would be pain-free? Only an idiot would say no! Your dog will feel pain, make NO mistake. You say you have little money, what are you going to do if the wound becomes infected? Leave the dog in pain? It will cost you more in the long run. Use your common sense,if you have any, that is,and STOP NOW before you do your dog some serious harm. Your dog looks on you as his master and protector, and you reward him with mutilation. Shame on you!!

Because doing this procedure is extremely painful ! What you are doing is slowly cutting off blood supply and the tail is rotting off. There is a serious high chance of infection and the puppy dying by doing this! If you serisouly can not afford to have the puppies tail docked at a vet clinic then you really should consider finding a suitable home for this pup. Do you plan on having early shots done, spay or neuter done?? There are alot of exspenses to owning a dog!!

You may not have much money now, but think about this. If you continue to rubberband the tail what are you going to do when it gets infected? dies yet still attached because of the bones and is limp? Do you also realize that the people that are telling you NOT to rubberband the tail are telling you not to as it is considered animal abuse and they or anyone that sees it can turn you in for animal abuse and you could be prevented from owning another dog period?
Just some things to really think about

A vet can dock a tail for around $35. But.... if you insist...
It should be done as a puppy... 10 days or so in... it normally takes 3 days for the tail to 'die' then you cut it off. Here's a read...

alright i will hold my tongue but please dont do this again. i have seen this done to newborn pups before but never an adult dog, i think it will be more serious in an adult dog if this is the case. the tail should die and fall off on it's own, please don't pull on it. i suppose neosporin would be o.k., the kind with pain relief would be best, this should help keep away infection but should it become infected i suggest immediate vet care as you could lose more than the tail, your dog can die from this.

This is not the prefered method for tail docking. I have seen it done and it produces a poor result.
The tail will turn black and fall off. Tail will never look right at the stump end.

Because it is cruelty to animals. If you can't afford to go to the vet for proper tail docking, you really can't afford to have a dog.
Perhaps you should put the rubber band around your ear and see how you like it.

I hate to say this but are you crazy? You dont remove a pitbulls tail.If you know anything about this breed you would know this. Someone should make you wear a rubber band around your neck until they can pull your head off because your not using it right now thinking that . Shame on you.
