The subject sounds very much like The Lady of Shallott. I'm familiar with John William Waterhouse's work but if you're looking for a version between the 12th and 18th century then Waterhouse is too late. Try searching on www.wga.hu for your subject.

Like the previous user answered, I'd have to think that the painting you're referring to is Lady of Shalott by John Waterhouse.
Waterhouse worked in the 19th century, and this particular painting was done around 1890 I believe. He's what art historians classically define as a "pre-Raphaelite" neo-classic style. The painting's housed in the Tate in London, UK and the woman appears arched in a large boat with lots of draperies beside her. It is a melancholy piece but a beautiful one. Maybe it's what you're thinking of? Here is a link for the image:

Lady staring at tower

the only one i can think of is "The Lady of Shalott" there is no tower in the pic. but the story goes along with her leaving a tower and getting in a boat, i hope this helps
