Parakeets are great birds for trick training! They're hyperactive and they love to be the center of attention! The person I know who trained her lovebird tricks uses unshelled, unsalted sunflower seeds and gives sunflower seeds only as treats when the bird performs. When training, she starts small like teaching the bird to climb something, then slowly adds on extra activities such as picking up toys. Her lovebird will collect her ytoys, walk across a table witht the toy and throw it in the toy box. This bird will spin around on command, pick toys out of a toy box, put them in a hole, then take the toys back and put them back in the toy box. The bird's trainer worked very hard on these tricks and everyone is quite impressed when they see them.
There's three rules when teaching your bird stuff like this:
1) Always be consistant! Don't say 'Pick it up' one time, then don't give a treat when it it does. Say the same thing for the same action unless teaching the bird to do more compex tricks. Always be positive and if the bird doesn't want to do something or can't do it right, end with a trick it can do well and reward it :-) .
2) Practice! Do one session daily for 15 minutes. You'd be suprised what your l;ittle guy can learn.
3) If things become too much for both of you, take a break and try something different the next day. If you hate the trick, so will the bird and you'll both hate what should be a load of fun.
4) Start with tricks that are natural for your bird. Many people start with 'Eagle wings!' when their bird streaches both wings over their back. The bird does this when streaching and after a while the bird associates the command with the wing streach. Always remember to reward with treats!
A note about treats: They should be tiny and easily eaten without shelling. That's why unshelled sunflower seeds broken in two are easy to use! Two bites and the bird is ready for another lesson ^.^ .
I hope I've helped! I want to train my Green Cheek Conures some tricks. I just don't know what to do first, LOL!

Parakeets make great pets because they can amuse you and make you laugh. Parakeets can be trained to be great acrobats. They can play with miniature seesaws and can even ride little bikes. It is easier to train a young parakeet, but it will take a lot of patience. You have to train them to do the same trick over and over again before they can do it by themselves. The male parakeet is easier to train than the female. Males learn to do tricks much faster. But if you want to train your bird, it is best to have only one bird. Otherwise, the birds will pay attention to each other instead of to you.
