Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think. Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know.

It's just one of those "polite" farewells. You can say it to pretty much anybody and it's never improper! I think you're making a negative generalization about the whole country...and that's just not cool!

On the other hand...I am not sure where you're from but even if I did I would not make any negative remarks about your country and/or your people! I have something called class! Ever heard of it?

The way I see things...every country has the good and the bad.

But you shouldn't loose any sleep over either!

Have a nice day!

I think every culture has their own little habits that drive everyone else mad.

Example... how many brits say "how are you" and get the response "fine". It's a habit... the standard reply... the way things are.

Us Brits don't ask "how are you" to hear "actually I've got PMS, an ingrowing toenail, my cat was sick on my jacket, and I crashed my car this morning". They expect to hear "fine thanks". Just like Americans don't always mean it when they say "Have a nice day" but at least they are saying that and not "sod off back to the UK you horrid little twerp" or similar.

For one, NYC is a very unique place. I don't know that much about people from FL..
But as to the rest of us Americans.. we sincerely do wish you a nice day, and we do care if you live or die. We're not nearly as shortsighted as some may think.
So, having said that..
have a nice day!

"Have a nice day" has become an expression commonly used without meaning, same as "How are you" as a greeting when passing someone we know. It's kind of a rhetorical question, and we don't expect an actual answer, other than "Fine, how about you?" Maybe the French use it too, "Tre bien, et vous?" "Have a nice day" is sometimes used by certain persons in a negative tone of voice, as well as a look. "Have a nice day" often is said as a courtesy by store clerks, bank tellers, etc., who don't even know you at all.

Well, I think it's just a way of acknowledging another human being. True, it may be mindless, but it's just like asking someone "How ya doin'" when you really hope they don't answer!I guess if we were all puppies, we could walk by and just pat each other on the head, but saying "Have a nice day" is probably a little more appropriate (and safer!)

Florida and NYC.

NYC is the a**hole capital of the world (next to France, of course).

And Florida, the're just retarded from standing under a hot sun all day.

When I was young I worked in a clothing store in Seattle Washington. During training they told you to tell each costumer to 'Have a nice day!' after you helped them. Maybe we as a nation where trained to do this by large corporations. Or it could be a sinister plot devised by an alien race.
Sorry...
It really is just considered polite here like saying 'goodbye' or 'cheerio'.

I think it's because they're all brought up with this sort of attitude. They think a nice expression makes up for them being the way they are, instead of realising that everyone can see they don't actually mean it. It seems to me that Americans are taught from an early age to be shallow and self-interested.

People are still trying to make the unworthy feel worthy of their compassion. By saying a superficial saying like "have a nice day", they are in a sense telling you that you are a lower class of person, and they feel bad for you, because they have to wish this greeting upon you. They dont care, it's just an excuse for them to make themselves feel better.
