The major American cities where there's great inexpensive, public transportation (buses, trolleys, subways, trains) are mostly on the East coast and West coast, and includes:
(1) New York City (my hometown)
(2) Boston
(3) Philadelphia
(4) Washington, DC
(5) Chicago
(6) San Francisco
(7) San Diego

New York has the widest area with public transportation. For all the miles that we can travel quickly, it only costs $2 a ride. Greatly discounted if you buy a monthly pass.

NYC. You would NOT want a car actually. Most people I know here have never gotten their driver's licenses and they range from 20s till their 80s. There is no need for a car here at all. Since moving back here a year ago, I haven't had to drive once and it feels great (and I don't have to pay for gas). Even to get out of the city is really easy with the extended public transportation. I regularly go to Washington, DC or Boston by train or bus. It is affordable and really convenient. Much better than fighting traffic. Even Montreal is just a train ride away. DC, Boston, and Montreal are all cities in which you don't need a car either.

Dispite my limited experience I personally believe San Francisco to have ample public trasportation to not necessitate a vehicle. They have cab companies, a underground rapid transit rail system with access to the city as well as surrounding counties, an above ground electrical trolly system, a standard bus system as well as a ferry system. I know and have known many people that upon moving to SF have gotten rid of their cars because of their lack of need. The city also has a ride share program and in worst case scenarios is only 7 miles wide. I have been told that Seattle, Washington also has an impressive system.

The easiest place to get around without a car is in New York City. It has the best public transit system in the world. No other city can compare.

i am in nyc and its super easy without a car. there are even trains that take you to trailheads outside of the city for hiking. But most cities I have been to have pretty good transportation. Even Anchorage has a really good bus system. You can go anywhere in the state of Rhode Island on the bus for 1.25.

Most of the major cities have public transportation. NYC, Chicago have public transportation for sure. I have visited both cities and used the public transportation.

I live in San Francisco and I don't own a car. There are multiple transit lines, BART, MUNi, Ferries for the bay, Rail for the peninsula. Parking is tough and rent's expensive, so actually most of my friends don't drive either. Overall it's pretty good, except when your bus doesn't show up and you have groceries occaisionally.

San Francisco has very good public transport. You can go anywhere by bus, BART (the subway), or cable car (which is pretty cool)
