bible people also went to war? Is that right?

I never knew that killing someone and murdering them were so different. I can see a difference if it is self defense, but in war, no soldier is really acting in self defense. So how is killing someone any different from murder?

And just because the state says it is ok, then you aren't going to hell? When did they become god's spokesmen?

And why is it ok for modern soldiers to kill just because it also happened in the bible?

I would have thought that Jesus' "thou shalt not kill' would apply equally to all life taking.

It should apply to all of mankind. People have a way of twisting things around to suit their purposes, don't they? I agree with you.

Killing people is a sin, absolutely, but sometimes it is necessary, but with a lot of consideration. Would you prefer just to lock out serial killer (with the possibility of escaping no matter how tightly guarded the prison is, or with the possiblility of pardon no matter what the reason is), or just finish him away? I think he diserve to die.

As a matter of war, even if you are soldier, you still have a choice for not murdering people, even if it meant disobeying orders. But in the case of war, it is the case of killing or be killed. Disobeying order in war also will end up in death sentence. What would you choose?

And the last of all, what we should talk here is God's turth, which is very different from human's truth. If you believe that God is the all knowing, than you should also believe that he knows which is absolutely right and which is absolutely wrong. Human may be clouded by ignorance, but God is not. So his judgement is different. This is of course if you believe God is the all knowing. If not, it is a completely different story.

The authority of the state is different than the authority of the person.

You cannot imprison someone, but you acting as an agent of the state can lock someone away.

You cannot steal someone's money at gunpoint, but if someone refuses their taxes, you acting as an agent of the state can arrest them at gunpoint and seize their assets.

You can kill someone only in self defense. However, you acting as an agent of the state can kill someone for any reason prescribed by law. For police officers in the United States today, this covers fleeing suspects considered to be dangerous - a category that a private citizen is not allowed to use deadly force against. A soldier acting under orders is utilizing the authority of the state, not their own personal authority, so the self-defense requirement is non-existent.

I'm not a Christian, but the Bible clearly tells people not to upset the social order, and to submit to the authority of the state.

God judges not so much the outward doings, but the workings of a man's heart. If you kill because you enjoy it, are being evil, cruel, or such, then you are in danger of damnation.
See Matthew 15:19-20. To have hard and fast rules is to be legalistic, like a Pharisse. Jesus taught all through his teachings that we should not be this way.

when you are in times of war the object is to stop the enemy(being recognized as someone/group who wants to inflict their will by any means necessary upon the opposing party) that is done at that time by firing at them---- generally war happens when the parties can't reach a compromise.
Everyone isn't a warrior and that is fine --- there are warriors, worshipers, followers and slackers --- individuals fall in one or more of these categories ---
There may come a time you will have to defend yourself, someone else or your beliefs/values --- or your property..... it's alarming the number of people who'd kill you over their pet but they don't believe in war ---
That's why we need a Savior - We humans aren't perfect and we do make mistakes/errors/sin ---

I completely and totally agree with you.

It's "OK" to kill when it fits whoever's political agenda.

In my opinion, killing is killing. I didn't realize that a jury, a judge, the governor, whoever is up on God's level to say "Yes, it's ok. Go ahead and put a needle in that guy's arm."
Many people say capital punishment is ok because otherwise that criminal will be in prison forever living off taxpayer's dollars. Ok. So, let me get this straight: Killing is ok so we won't spend money? HUH? I don't get it. I never, ever will and no one can ever convince me otherwise.
To be honest, I pray for the people in power. For those people sending soldiers into battle to kill, for those who sentence someone to death. They are playing God. And from what I've heard, GOD himself doesn't care for that.

Dude, you need to just stop.
Wars are going to happen, and are unavoidable, and whether you are for or against ANY war, you should support the people who go in it.
They risk their lives for you. So just shut up.
And they do kill in self-defense.
I don't think they go around killing the civilians.

I followed Jesus befor I went to war and still do now and I am telling you its really hard to love someone who wants to destroy everything and has the intent and means to do so in hand, so I killed them out of love so they wouldn't destroy what was created by and because of love.

If you are fighting for a noble cause, it is ok. I'm not saying that war is great, but sometimes it is necessary to protect your and others lives. We all have a purpose. Some will be to preach, others to carry swords.

"but in war, no soldier is really acting in self defense."

Come again?

Besides, it does not say "thou shalt not kill",
It says:
יב לֹא תִרְצָח, {ס} לֹא תִנְאָף; {ס} לֹא תִגְנֹב, {ס} לֹא-תַעֲנֶה בְרֵעֲךָ עֵד שָׁקֶר. {ס}
