Because they killed the polytheistic believers and coopted their traditions to convince the rest to join them.

Because in a polytheistic religion, you have a different god that controls each different thing (such as the sea, fire, lightning, love etc.). In a monotheistic religion, there is one god in charge of everything. Obviously a god that can control lightning and the wind and everything else could kick the a** of each god that only controls one thing.
This is rather simplistic, but people don't want to believe in a god that is less powerful than someone else's god, so they go for the one that can control everything.

Because it is easier to pray to one God than to a multiple of confusion... communication is best when done 1 to 1 - this is what the human soul seeks to achieve..... a monotheistic religion serves this need the best!

Who says? Catholics worship God but pray to all the saints, Jesus, and/or the Virgin Mary. That seems pretty polytheistic to me. There are other examples but I figure this is one of the most noticeable.

Modern man hold the believe that God is a supreme being as did primitive man.. with one difference...
As man accumulated knowledge his perception of God changed.
Eg:To primitive man, all forces of nature were "gods".
However, as we evolved intellectually, the need for different gods to explain natural phenomena became less and less.
It could be argued that God evolved from "gods" because of our own understanding of our surroundings and that of the universe.

I think it comes from this "my god is better than your god" crap - so now you have religions following a single god that have become dominant.
