Good Absinthe is very nice..... a lot of good ones coming out of France and Switzerland. Try some of the brand from here... better then Spanish, German or Czech brands.

Lemercier Amer 72 or any of the Francois Guy are my Favs...

It's made a number of different ways.... different herbs and quantity of the herbs give different brands different taste.

http://www.absinthebuyersguide.com/

99.9% of the buzz comes form the high alcohol content.... Not from the wormwood. Wormwood may do a little to tweak the buzz.... but in all reality... not much. You get as much tweaking from the nutmeg in your eggnog as the wormwood in the Absinthe.

Good Absinthe is not cheap! $60 to $150 USD and shipping... add another $60.

So if you are looking for an Cheap Acid trip..... Absinthe not the drink for you. But, if you are looking to enjoy and new drink and appreciate the more subtle tones and combination of different herbs can bring to that drink.... by all mean give it a try.....

Oh.... and by-the-way.... you're not going to lose your mind. Drink too much and you'll pass out and puke.... but you're not going to lose your mind.

FYI... stuff they make now is just like the good stuff they made back in the 1800s early 1900s. It is not like the cheap stuff that was cut/made with wood alcohol back then.... (One of the reasons for all the bad press on absinthe).

It is not illegal in the states just can not import or sell... once it is in your possession... You are fine...wink wink

It is legal in most European countrys.... Switzerland just re-legalized it... France and Switzerland are the orginal homes of Absinthe... Never has been illegal in the UK and Spain and a number of other countries.... and again... Czech stuff sucks.... they add food color and really don't take the time to brew a fine product.... Looks neat though... NEON GREEN. The good stuff isn't neon green..... Clear or just a hint of color.

and Absynthe is just another spelling..... more offen spelled absinthe....

Ok, Nic K, that's, um, stupid.

Yes, I've had absinthe in Germany, where it is legal. It's bright green, and 70% alcohol.

Absinthe is mostly just alsohol, but prepared with bitter herbs, including wormwood. Wormwood contains a neurotoxin called thujone. This is part of what gives absinthe its bitter taste, and causes a tingle on your lips and tounge. Most absinthe has about 10/mg of thujone, with some absinthe reaching 100/mg. In higher doses, thujone can cause hallucinations and disrupt muscle control. In most cases, the 70% alcohol of absinthe will get to you far before the thujone content will.

In the 19th century, at the height of the absinthe craze, not only did absinthe have a higher thujone content than now, but in many cases the brewing process left it containing heavy metals such as lead and copper. Copper was sometimes *added* in order to increase the green color. This meant that absinthe was toxic, and people did die from metal toxicity.

Now, getting drunk on absinthe is mostly like getting drunk on champaigne. A little more of an awake and alert kind of drunk than beer. There's a slight tingle on your lips, but little more.

If someone is badly effected, it would be due to alcohol poisioning, not any unique property of absinthe.

You just need to be careful, a little goes a LONG way, if its the real stuff, most the time its not. The difference is wormwood, its what makes you "trip" for lack of a better word. Its not like being "drunk", just like laid back and happy, think perma smile. No hangover, but if you drink it, drink only that, and never more than 2 shots. Make sure you are in a safe place, do not drive etc etc. Let me know if you have any other questions:)

i have 2 bottles on the way from spain right now...it it doesn't taste very good...tastes like a mix of black licorish and rubbing alcohol....it wasn't a big deal.....the equivalence of moonshine it's the wormwood in it that's supposed to make you hallucinate...but you can get wormwood here in the states. does it get you drunk...its stron so yeh it does the trick...is it worth all the trouble of getting it....meh not really.....more of a status symbol i've noticed my friends using it as.....my friends use it as a way to meet girls....like hey you wanna come back to my pad....i got a bottle of absynth" pretty lame if you ask me

Yes. The wormwood, contrary to legend, is not psychoactive. But the stuff is extremely strong -- mine was 130 proof (it was Absinthe Montmarte from Austria). You can order it from http://www.absintheonline.com/ and they ship it via courier -- very fast. You can also order replica absinthe glasses and spoons. *Stay away from Czech absinthe* -- it's nasty and inauthentic. Don't set anything on fire when you drink it -- again, inauthentic. The best source of info online is http://www.wormwoodsociety.org/

Enjoy!

Time flew by, it was a great buzz for me, but one of my friends freaked out and thought the the apocolypse was apon us and that he had to kill us. No joke, other than that it was a great high.

Get a brand with a high thujone concentration.
