I have a Harlequin Dane and she is the sweetest dog. They tend to be a one person dog. Very easy to train for praise. I work at a vet's office and the danes that we see tend to be timid. A lot of owners do not socialize their dogs- with a dog that will be over 100lbs- this is dangerous. The dogs are extremely scared in new situations and tend to react aggressively. When mine was a puppy- she went everywhere with me. We have a local lake that people walk- we went there every day and I allowed everyone to pet her. We went to the flea market and took her with us to friends' houses. I took her to work almost everyday also and she is the most well adjusted and well trained dog- everyone wants her- even the local police department!

We recently bought a Great Dane and she is sweet. We have a 5 year old and a newborn and she is not aggressive towards them at all. A few things to consider besides temperament is the genetic disorders that can occur. They are prone to bloating. Which can kill them if not taken to the vet. This can happen when they gorge on food or water. Basically thier stomach will flip upside down and swell up. If this happens you have to rush to the Vet asap for medical attention. Another disorder is hip dysplasia. This is common in large breed dogs but can be avoided if your purchasing a puppy from a person who has had the parents tested. Other than that the only other thing I can think of is the input and output. They should eat food that is ment for large breed dogs. This can be pricey. We buy Iams which runs about $20 per 40 lb bag. At five cups a day, which is the current recommendation to feed our pup, we are spending more than usual. (We also have a miniature Schnauzer. A 40 lb bag could last considerably longer for her!) And than the output... Be prepared to clean HUGE piles of poop. It's almost as big as a baby cow's! But besides those things these dogs are great. Very loving and sweet. They can be powerful but with trainging they can be controlled. (I'm 5' tall so I should know. LOL) I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Of course different breeds have different tendencies, but much (perhaps most) of their temperament is determined by how they are raised and treated.

I've never personally owned a great Dane but have known 3 of them very well. One belonged to a roommate and lived in the same house with us. The other two were owned by close friends. All three have been your basic big sweet goofy dogs.

Just be prepared to shell out some significant $$ keeping them fed and know that larger dogs are prone to hip problems in later life that can lead to some large vet bills.

Danes are the sweethearts of the dog world, loving and gentle, intelligent and easy to train. They need a lot of love and attention. Do not get one if you are not prepared to pay vet bills and food costs.Because of their large size problems with hips can be costly, and their longevity is in the 8 year span. Make sure you buy from a reputable dealer or even better go on line to Dane Rescue, and see whats out there. Good luck and enjoy many years of fine companionship and unquestioning adoration.

Your best bet on getting a Great Dane is meeting the parents. If you are getting one from a breeder they should have them there. If your getting one from rescue, you should find out why it's in rescue in the first place. Usually the will disclose the information. From my personal experience dealing with Great Danes in the vet field, I have only met sweet ones. Alot of their personality depends on the owner too. They should always be spayed and neutered, not only to prevent cancers but to also get rid of the extra testosterone or hormones that can lead to aggressive behavior.

I have a hotel and we have had 5 great danes. They are lovely dogs but short lived and also very prone to cancer compared to other breeds I have had. The female great dane we have is really lovely, very friendly and not bad at all with slobbering as compared to the males we have had. Male dogs tend to be more protective and territorial in any breed. Any dog if mistreated can turn..it all depends on the dogs training and how it is treated and socialized.

I have heard that they are sweet dogs. I think they are prone to stomach problems of some sort. Read about the breed on different Great Dane websites.

Most Great Danes are very loving and sweet and goofy but be sure to research the breed yourself so you can be sure it is the right breed for you

Lot of people say they are dumb. They are not. Danes are very quick learners and are very sensitive. They do not like to be in trouble and there for will do all possible to please their owner.
But as suggested by others do lots of research on the breed. Though they are beautiful and large dogs they are not for everyone.
Since they are large, that's means larger vet/medicine bill, high food bill,etc.... loss of your bed, couch...LOL

Past puppyhood, they are laid back couch potatoes. Most of them are just like big babies. I've never found them to be stupid or hard to train. They just love being with their people so they do not make good outside dogs.

Not only do I have one, he is my second one, and I do Dane rescue.
