On of the most famous atheists to "convert" was Nobel prize winner, Sir Fred Hoyle, the famous Cambridge astronomer. He did an extensive study of the "Big Bang Theory" with the object of proving to religious friends that religion was completely absurd. Instead it was he who changed his opinion 180 degrees.
He concluded that the odds against the Universe spontaneously "springing into existence" as asserted by the atheist-materialists to be in the order of 1,000,000,000 to one against. He then concluded that the chance that it could contain the exact amount of matter, force, energy, momentum, etc needed to expand in an ordered manner instead of collapsing upon itself or flying apart to be again 1,000,000,000 to one.
Further that there could possibly be the exact elements and molecular formations as well as the conditions needed to permit life to arise anywhere with the Universe to also be 1,000,000,000 to one against.
His conclusion was that one had to accept the fact that all scientific evidence pointed overwhelmingly to an Intelligent Design and Pupose and that the atheist explanation of the origin of Life and the Universe to be equivalent to the chance that:
"a tornado moving through a junk yard could "spontaneously" assemble a working 747 out of the parts found in the junk yard."
Since Hoyle, the number of "pure" or physical scientists describing themselves as "atheist" has declined from over 80% in the 1950s to around 15% today. They may not be devout Muslims, Christians or Hindus, but they sure as heck ain't atheists anymore!

With very, very few exceptions I tend not to believe it. I think that a certain amount of teenagers 'rebel' against God and call themselves atheist because it goes well with their 'anarchy' t-shirts and 'up yours Mom and Dad' attitude. Later, they simply 'return' to theistic belief. They were never atheists - no atheist is 'mad at God' (it doesn't even make any sense).
There are also the mock former atheists who prance around churches spreading lies about atheism: 'I had turned away from God so that I could live a life of hedonism and not be accountable... but then I found the Lord Almighty Praise Be Glory Hallelujah' - this propaganda must be effective since a lot of the slander they spread regularly gets parroted back here on Y!A.
This is interesting, however. I tend to consider it one of the 'legit' exceptions (although Deism is 99% the same as atheism anyway):

I've heard of people who are atheists out of ignorance, converting. By this, I mean people who know very little about religion, so don't practice it. And then someone comes along and talks them into it.
I've never met an atheist however, that truly knew about religion (from personal experience or otherwise), had decided to be an atheist, and then changed his mind... In fact, I don't see how such a thing would be possible, short of him suffering some sort of brain damage, aneurism, etc.

In my experience, people who call themselves athiests are not actually athiest, they are people who have fallen away from the christian religion because of some sort of personal disagreement with the religion itself, and they haven't found a path that they are comfortable with. To be atheist, you would have to honestly believe that nothing else exists, and that is not where most people are. But to answer your question in a yes or no format, yes, two people who I know previously considered themselves athiest have found comfort in druidic and/or nature-centered paths.

I converted to a belief in a Higher Power, but not to the Judeo-Christian God. I went from Christian to Atheist to Agnostic to Pagan, so I don't know if that answers the question you're asking.

People are converting all the time.
Christians become atheist. Atheists become Muslims. Muslims become Buddhists. Buddhist become Pagans. Round and round it goes and where it stops nobody knows.
It's kind of like trying on shoes. It takes a while before you know if they really fit.

Yes, my cousin was an atheist. He is an aerospace engineer that converted to believing in God. He said the more he learned about the universe, the more it was impossible to believe it was all random.
