Pure bred dogs are the smartest to train, mutts are very dumb and slow and don't get it. Personally I love labradors, been training one now and boy is she really smart, learns commands one time and remembers it. She has had a very high need to chew everything this first year so far so if you get one be aware of that. I also like Golden Retrievers which are very smart too and lovable but the longer hair makes for more maintenance. I'd say pure-bred, short hair, you pick the breed and you will be set but you must spend time with the dog training and playing with it so they are well adjusted.

best trained? any dog whose owner was persistent,patience,dedicated,etc....
low maintenance?they all need the basics(food, water, vet, love, attention, etc) as far as the grooming part stay away from any medium to long hair (shedder or non-shedder) they require daily brushing/combing. Short coats also need brushing/combing just not as often. Dogs need nail trimming and baths. The list goes on.
Deciding on the best trained and low maintenance dog really depends on how much time you are willing to spend with your dog.

Not to be a smart a s s but if one doesn't want to spend lots of time training and don't want to mess with maintenance. One should get a stuff dog. No training or maintenance there.

LABS short coats very little combing needed, just spring and fall for shedding control. Something all dogs need. Easy to train and are so ready to please you. Yes I am very bius( sp) as I am owned by 5 labs currently. I have also found that a lab puppy can be 95% potty trained by 5 weeks old. All takes the right start in life. And man do they retain information which makes training easy. Labs are a dime a dozon, but I would recomend getting from a good breeder that stands behind their breedings. Back yard breeders and some ok professional hobby breeders house the dogs in kennels all their lives and that is not good for a lab as they need play time and time to burn off the energy.

Sorry I disagree with DogMama. German Sheppard's are not low maintenance. My brother has had two and they require tons of exercise and they shed like crazy. They also have a high instinct to protect and this can be a problem. I'm not sure of an answer for you but I don't want another sheppard to end up in a shelter.

Any breed can be well trained if you put the time and effort into training it. Low maintenance? I don't know of one. All dogs require vets, house training, vet, obedience training, vet exercise, vet, most require grooming, vet, attention oh and did I mention vets?

It sounds like you are looking for a Greyhound. They don't have doggy odor, they are very calm, no grooming required other than nail trims and the occassional wipe with a rubber mit. You do have to have a 6ft fenced in yard or be able to leash walk them since they can't be left off lead...they are sighthounds and will chase anything.

They are often called "The World's Fastest Couch Potatoe."

Retired racing greyhounds are great pets. They don't shed and typically don't have that "dog" smell. They don't require a lot of exercise (even though that is not the perception). They are sweet and seen as couch potatoes. I have even heard them called the cat of the dog world because they are able to do their own thing and are happy to just be near you.
