My son had the same problem. I took him to his pediatrician and they did x-rays which found that he was very constipated and had a lot of blockage. The doctor said that this is common for children his age because what probably happened was that when he did need to have a bowel movement he would just hold it in because he didn't want to go at that particular moment. Anyway after doing this for a period of time his body got blocked up with 'poo' and the reason he was going in his pants was because it needed to come out so it was just working its way out on its own and he was then unable to get to the bathroom in time. His doctor had me give him a laxative every other day for a month and then I had to have him sit on the toilet twice a day. I had to talk with my son frequently about the fact that when his body told him that he had to 'go' that he needed to listen to his body and go to the bathroom no matter what he was doing.

If he is 9 and not completley trained, you should consider that there maybe emotional or medical problems which inhibit his control. It is certainly something you want to deal with as soon as possible - teasing will only get worse. A child phycologist can probably help you with this.

In the meanwhile, you should stop the laxitives, which are probably casuing more problems than solving, and the long term effects are really problematic. I think also that negative discipline (no tv etc) will give him reason to act out and subconcioulsly have an accident on purpose. Huge prizes, tons of praise when he manages to go a whole day without an accident is fine, but if he has an accident, there is now no reason for him to try. prizes for each time he poops on the toilet, tons of praise, a reward system etc will go along way to help. Find out what toy he really wants and make a chart for each time he poops, with that being the goal. Never tease him or punish him for accidents and always deal with them calmly and lovingly so that he knows you love him.

best of luck!

Our youngest son had this problem until he was 12 and we too tried everything. One day we were at his check-up and we happened to get the PA instead of his regular doctor and she told us that this is a common problem for children. She said he was having trouble voiding his lower intestines completely and didn't know what it felt like to go. She prescribed something called Miralax and it was a miracle for us. This is a new kind of laxative that has none of the side effects we have come to expect, IE loose stools and cramps. It is a powder that you mix with the beverage of your choice wit no change in flavor or texture. We mixed it with chocolate milk in the morning and made a small milkshake in the evening and he saw this as a treat instead of taking medicine. Within a week he was going fine and within a few months his body had been retrained to know how and when to go and has done great for 2 years. This problem can also cause bedwetting. Good luck you will be surprised how much this problem effects your child my son is a much more self assured, confident, happy young man.

What do you mean he has problems going on time. What time are you wanting him to go. The laxatives and things are probably whats making him have accidents. You should never be giving all that to a 9 yr old. If his body gets use to them his natural abilities to go on his own will stop and he will have to use supplements and laxatives all his life. STOP GIVING HIM THOSE BEFORE YOU DO PERMANENT DAMAGE. Kids can go a day or two without going.
My son is 11 and dosent go all the time, i normally ask him about once a week or so if hes going okay or not because he has a problem with going days but i never give him those things i give him lots of water, fruit, and apple or grape juice. Those are natural things that will make his body let him go.
If he dosent go for more than two days maybe you should take him to the dr. they can x-ray his tummy and see if hes backed up and whats going on in there.

You need to talk to his pediatrician. He could have a blockage or something wrong internally. Also have him drink alot of water, that will help with moving of the bowels. Laxitives are not a good long term solution, as the body then becomed dependant on the medication to pass. PLease talk to the doctor. Good luck

Take him to a doctor it might be something more to the problem than you know, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
