I think you should face away from them. To each their own though. I face away most of the time. I don't know, I think it also depends on if the person is sitting or standing, their body size, etc.

Because of the chances of tripping and falling in the narrow space, you should face away so that you can lean on or catch yourself on the seat backs in front of you instead of suddenly landing in someone's lap.

Turn your back to them, and try not to touch them too much.
Squeeze your butt in, as close to the seat ahead of them as possible, cause nobody wants a butt in their face, either, lol.

Good question... I don't think there's any kind of real convention for that sort of thing. But when I think about it, I'd feel more comfortable turning away.
