They are prisoners to poverty anyways... why not have food in their tummy? With free food, workout facilities, A/C and cable televsion... wouldn't it make more sense to commit some non violent crime and go to jail for a few years? You even get laid now and then!!! That's it I'm selling my house and going homeless!!!

Basically I just mean that if I was homeless, I would want to get myself arrested... better than living on the streets...

I think everyone missed your point entirely. It is pretty hard for many people to understand that some people have such miserable lives that jail might actually be a step up in their standard of living.
Yes they do get arrested to get off the street and a meal. Ask any cop. If I was stuck out in the cold with no way to survive, jail might look pretty good to me too.

They actually considered building a facility in the town where I am from similar to a jail where homeless people could check themselves in and out ot get clean, eat, etc. But when it came time to vote on this issue -guess what? Not enough votes. Didn't pass. I think it was a great idea. I used to work as a Corrections Officer and knew for a fact that homeless people purposely got arrested sometimes just to come in and get free healthcare, cleaned up, and a hot meal. Why not fund a place like that but not call it a jail.

Depending on the individual person and the area in question, a lot of those who are homeless do actually try to get arrested for that very reason.

The main reason that the majority of homeless, the ones you see rummaging and looking rather ragged, don't try to get arrested typically lies in mental health issues.

Many of the true homeless you see on the streets have medical conditions having to do with mental instability concerns. They cannot afford or are unwilling to become medicated and are typically not able to afford or even consider full blown mental health care.

Many were turned out of the institutions due to overcrowding and money issues. They don't typically have the capacity to consider the option that you are providing.

The true solution, if we were a fully open and benign society, would be for each city/state to provide assistance to the homeless in a full 360 format.

Starting with bringing them in and analyzing their needs from the top down.

If they need medication or mental assistance, it should be provided. Once they are stable, then we can work on integrating them back into society.

A support group to back this and full medical staff to assist and we could have a large group of people back in society and contributing instead of causing concern.

Love as always,

Sebastian

Don't mind that Don here above he's too weird!
Most jails in fact are not air conditioned in the cell areas. Most jails charge for sandwiches and sodas, they are not free. It's too much paperwork for arrests for once they get arrested they are in the system and accountability begins, so the cops I am sure look away for they have no place to take them as the shelters are crowded. America helps the world but can't help it's own in many cases and people visit here from abroad and can't believe we treat our own citizens with so much disrespect, put our parents in nursing homes so fast and on and on. Yep, it's a shame, the dollar rules.

They may not be living an ideal lifestyle, but they still have their freedom to come and go as they please and they do not have to answer to anybody unless they are committing a crime.

When you become a prisoner, you loose ALL of your human rights there is someone dictating your every move. There's nobody to complain to if you are beaten, robbed and raped.

Do not be fooled by what you see on tv. Prisons are filthy places to be. I'd rather be outside on a cold park bench than in a pee infested cell that I wont be able to escape after being gang raped.

Given the option of living in a jail or living on the streets, most people would choose the freedom of the streets. 3 hots and a cot doesn't make up for the rigors of being in prison.

If every church in the US sponsored one homeless person (let them stay in the church building in trade for cleaning up after services) there would be no homelessness. I know a guy who hit a cop in order to go to jail. When he went before the judge, he said he hadn't eaten in 4 days but didn't want to hurt a civilian.

First of all just because they made poor life decisions and are now homeless does not mean they should give up their freedom to become a prisioner in jail. Locked up with dangerous criminals. Also, its your tax dollars supporting the jail system, it costs money to provide food and shelter, etc for people in jail. Not to mention, how can you expect people to better themselves if they are locked away?

Because homeless people are usually drug addicts and alcoholics and I'd simply rather not provide them "three hot and a cot" with my tax dollars just because they're too lazy to get a job and take responsibility.

Jail is supposed to be a punishment for bad acts, not a reward because it's better than what you've got now.

Because first of all being homeless is not illegal. You can't just arrest someone because they don't have a home. Second of all, where the hell would you put them and who is going to pay to have them all imprisoned? YOU? I doubt it. The prisons are already overflowing with people that deserve to be there. Don't clog the prison system with homeless people. Thats what shelters are for.
