I'm dating a guy that is 9 years younger than me. He's 31 and I'm 40. The problem is I can't have kids and I'm afraid to tell him. I don't want to take the chance of him leaving me. Is having children that important to guys?

Look you obvioulsy have feeling for this guy and he does for you. So just have the conversation with him and let him know how you feel.
If he is hell bent on having a kid then he isnt the one for you.
I know what I am talking about I am a 40 year old myself and I have never been married nor do I have or want kids.
So trust me have the talk. Things are better when everyone is on the same page.
Good Luck

It varies from guy to guy. This is a subject you probably should get a feel for how he feels. Most guys I know want kids, you don't have to tell him till you talk about the subject and see what he wants, You wont be able to have kids later either, so if its something he wants your better off knowing up front, and if its something that can be solved through adoption that's a good thing to know up front too. You need to be honest and open in my opinion. If he feels deceived later, things will be worse, and you will feel worse too!

The question can not be answered in this room because the only one that can answer it is your boyfriend. You need to just tell him because the longer you let the relationship continue without telling him the more hurt he will be. Also by now you should know that any long-term relationship is built on honesty and trust and right now you are not being either to him.

I do not have, and do not want to have, children. Ever.
But I can speak only for myself.
Tell him the truth. If it's an issue now, it will be a bigger issue later. Best to have all the cards out on the table now.
Keep adoption in mind, if you're both agreeable to it.

Surprised he hasnt had kids by that age. Yes, eventually he will want one. You think its hard for you, I am 42 and dating a 19 yr old and I know she wants kids she keeps asking for one and I have 3 already. Gonna have to let her go one day when she puts her foot down I guess.

Varies on the guy. A lot of guys it won't matter one bit to, others it'll matter a lot. Don't hide the truth.
