Gel ice packs and ibuprophen. Eat soft foods for the next few days. The soreness will subside.
Now when cleaning them. A water pick works great to get out the food stuck between the wires. Just be gentle on your gums. Another good help is proxie brushes and you can use a wooden toothpick to go along your gum line. You must take care that you keep your mouth clean or you can get sore gums. Be gentle on your gums but make sure you try and get the plaque off them at the gum line. An electric tooth brush really helps especially a Rotodent.
Congratulations on your journey to a beautiful smile.

I had braces for YEARS. I feel your pain!
2 ibuprofen usually took care of the pain after the braces were tightened or adjusted. If you're still sore, eat soft foods like pudding, PBJ's, and ice cream for a day or two after an adjustment. Make sure to brush well and use mouthwash, as well as regular flossing in the areas you can reach, so food particles don't build up around the braces.
Good luck! The results are worth it!

First, apply wax (which they should have given you) to the parts of the braces that scrape against your inner cheeks. These can lead to pretty big gaping holes from sleeping at night if you don't take care of it.
Second, go invest in a small plastic tapered looking pipecleaner. It's very good for getting rid of leftover food that brushing won't take away, and for those times you're too lazy to floss, this is at least a somewhat good second option.
Third, if you can stand it, no harm in some mouthwash.

put some wax on the places where the brackets are sticking inside ur lips. its best 2 leave the wax in overnight(wat i did) so that the indentations in ur lips go away. in the morning, brush ur teeth like normal, u dont need floss or fluoride. eat soup and at soft foods like ice cream. and drink cold drinks (helps 2 numb ur teeth, gums). at night brush ur teeth, floss and use mouthwash/fluoride 2 help get the food out of ur teeth. thats it! hope i helped!
