Depends on the School. I used to practice Tekwondo.. I have been practicing for 7 years, I got a Brown Belt (the last before black belt). In my school you need to practice at least for ten years before to get the black belt. So we stay for years en each Belt or level.
I loved my school because they prepared students really good, We won many fighting competitions because we were really experienced in each level.
This is a disciplice, you need to train your muscles and make them flexible and strong. That's take time.

The time between belts will very on the belt. It is easier to go from white to yellow than it is to go from purple to green. As you get higher up the length of time between belts will get longer because there is more complex movements that you have to train your body to do. It takes time to train yourself to move in ways you haven't moved before.
Don't rush it. Everyone learns at a different pace. The best thing you can do for yourself is to make sure you know all you need to (very well) to move up to the next level.
I know brown belts who are better than 2nd degree black belts. A belt is not a measure of who you are, its a measure of where your at in your training.
I'd rather be an excellent yellow belt than a crappy blue belt.
Have fun with your training and don't rush things.

In TKD: usually it takes 2-3 months to get from white to yellow, and another 2-3 months to get from yellow to orange and so on (white to yellow to orange to green to blue). It takes about 4 months to get from blue to red. It takes about 6 months to a year to go from red to brown belt. From brown to black, it usually takes a year or more.
It usually depends on the person and how often you go to TKD classes. Good luck.

It depends on ones efforts. But normally any where between two months to six months for a step. It would also depend on the coach. Some times these times could be drastically cut down or extend to years.
