I beg to differ... :)

I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).

For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm

Cordially,
John

To answer William C's accusation that organised religion is cult-like and oppressive: I've never found going to Church and worshipping my Saviour at all a hardship. And these beliefs that people have that the Church is some oppressive evil organisation... perhaps people should actually go to a Church sometime (just think, whenever any Christians make a stand against something we believe to be wrong - and I acknowledge that we do often overreact - we are told taht we are talking about something we don't know about (e.g. if we haven't read the 'Da Vinci Code' or seen 'Jerry Springer - the Opera'), and I'm sure all you lovely people dissing the Church wouldn't want to be hypocritical now, would you? :-P ;-) ). 'Cos I think these allegations are unfounded: yes, I've been going to church all my life, and yes I've been brought through the ranks of Sunday School etc., but I've only ever been told what people believe and it has been left up to me to decide whether I can personally accept it.
And, I certainly know may intelligent/strong people who believe in God.

And personally I take great comfort in the fact that Jesus didn't lie to us, He told us it would be hard ""If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." [John 15:18-19]

Hello! I think there are two very different answers to this question depending upon what you are really asking.

Belief in God is based on faith which one could argue is an evolved defense mechanism as you described. It is easier to have faith in a heaven where everything is paradise than to deal with the thoughts that there is none. So in this case, it would not be a weakness, it would be a strength as you could then focus on farming and hunting (i.e. - working) and other activites that ensure your families survival.

The second piece of this is if your faith is God is based on an organized religion. Organized religions survive based on membership. You can see many, what we would call "cult-like" behaviors in organized religion - going to a place of worship at regular intervals, repetition of vows or proclimations, etc. If these activites create a hardship inthat they interfere with your hnting and farming (i.e. - work) then yes, believing in God can be a weakness.

Like the wise say "Everything in moderation"...

Hope this helps...

Believing in god is different from believing in a heaven which is like a paradise you go to when you die.
Those are two seperate beliefs.
It is possible to believe in god without believing there is an afterlife, or a heaven, or a place your loved ones go to when they die, and are in right now.
Believing in a superior being, or beings, and a creator or creators is a very human quality. Even if someone is an atheist, he/she is subject to the powers of nature, which still means belief in something bigger than ourselves.
We are a very tiny part of the world, the universe, and we have a sense of our own smallness.
If it is comforting for people to believe in an afterlife, and that their loved ones are in a better place; I see nothing wrong with that.
What I do object to, is people who take advantage of others, and charge people money to 'communicate' with loved ones.

At least when you lie down at night, your soul goes out and you see yourself in far and distant places- known and unknown, If you are an intellect, i think this similarity should suffice. coming to life is no joke - yet a complex process and real. Sickenss is real, so also is dying and re waking. Something makes us man, not the body but your soul thus when you diem ppl see you lying there but says you are gone becos its not you in body but the soul that goes out. Recall all the soul travels you call dreams?
You better start living reality now and halt deceiving your soul. Repackage this soul before it is too late. Life is not the home but a passage and our home is where we came from- heaven and thats reality.
Please do not let the chief deceiver deceive yopu about temporal but determining life.
Please my dear sister.

The Lord is my refuge and strength. Heaven is a real place and is described throughout the bible. As for dying, I'm not quite ready yet as I have some more things I need to do on earth, however, I am looking forward to the day I go home to be with Jesus for all eternity.

NO the lack of belief in God is the weakness. Heaven is real, and is available to those who want it enough and are strong enough to have fatih in God. You can't get to heaven any faster than when God chooses that it is time for you to die. Life here on earth is very short and temporary. But life in heaven is eternal. Just as rejecting Jesus as your savior will put you in hell for all eternity. The choice is yours. Good things happen to those who obey the word of God and await His blessings.

you've got it, its like when a child can't deal with something so they make up some one or thing in their life to give them comfort or to blame. People use the bible and religion for an out they can say what ever to get over feelings, emotions, anything by using an imaginary god to pull them out. But it doesn't work because just like the child someday you have to admit it was all imagination

The fact that humans have dreamt up various brands of sky pixies over the years tells us a lot about humanity, but nothing about the nature of the universe or the existence of such a sky pixie.

Generally, governments, states, societies etc. like the idea of a sky pixies because they are used to keep the masses in line and content with the sh/itty end of the stick most of them have, whilst individuals believe in their sky pixie as a sort of cosmic comfort blanket, hoping that their ultimately futile and meaningless existence (in the grand scale of things that is, we're all meaningful on a local scale) is somehow part of the sky pixie's plan. It's no excuse to say that you believe in a sky pixie because your parents indoctrinated you, as we all have the ability to think critically, and very, very few of us continue to believe in the tooth fairy or santa...

I chose to have hope and believe in an afterlife. I look forward to the day when I will be with my loved ones who have passed on. If your child died, you will never see him/her again? That is so hopeless. I chose to err on the side of heaven.

Why do humans have an innate feeling to believe in a life after? No other creature has that ability? I think God instilled that in us, we are made in his image...

I think its a lack of personal responsibility. which is ironic because these people are always going on about that as the cause of all problems.

the devil made me do it
How about growing up and do what you want without some spiritual excuse for everything.

close the book and go outside and play...its a beautiful day

although the truly devoted are happy about dying if they believe in the rapture (like GWB)
