I've heard good Christian folk say this and I've heard it in a song by Depece Mode who seem pretty far removed from Christianity. If possible could you explain this?

The phrase “a personal relationship with Jesus,” is not found in the Bible. Thus, there is no sustained systematic theological reflection on what the phrase means. As a result, using the language of personal relationship is bound to lead to all sorts of confusion.

Rather than saying, “I have a personal relationship with Jesus,” why don’t people say instead, “I have faith in Jesus,” or “I believe in Jesus.”?

I own just about everything that Depeche Mode ever did. As with all things you have to look at the surrounding data to find the context. The entire Violator album was about drug addiction. Personal Jesus was a drug dealer. Hense...
Your own personal jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone whos there

Feeling unknown
And youre all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
Ill make you a believer

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know Im a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal jesus...

Feeling unknown
And youre all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
Ill make you a believer

I will deliver
You know Im a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal jesus

God is omipresent. He can have a PERSONAL relationship with everyone on the planet and each would be unique.

Going to church to worship is great. We need the fellowship with other Christian to keep the world at bay. It is also our opportunity to praise and worship Him.

Sunday school and Bible Study is wonderful. This is where our teaching comes from. These two help us to learn and grow in Christianity. It also allows for questions and comments.

See, when you have a personal relationship with God, you can talk to him about anything. And believe me, He will not tell a soul and will offer insight and understanding. When you have this type of relationship with Him, you know that you are getting the best advice in the world. I am not referring to prayer, I am talking about holding a converstaion with Him just like you would anybody else.

God Bless!!

They're talking about a personal relitionship with Jesus. I think the Depeche Mode song was a mockery of that saying because they thought people sounded foolish when they said things like that.

Like the Depeche Mode song says, it's "someone who can hear your prayers, someone who's there" and "someone who cares". It's someone you can share your burdens with and who listens to your confessions.

Being someone's own personal "Jesus" is feeding their co-dependency, or just helping them through a rough time. I think it's usually a negative term, but it can be positive, depending on the situation.

People have their own personal stories of an 'example' of the 'concepts' represented in the basic story of Jesus ~ teaching, and/or martyr related. Someone they knew, or knew of ~ died, or made a serious personal effort of forgiveness and/or sacrifice.

They consider this to have enabled them to learn or understand something they normally wouldn't have. Something they consider 'profanely' profound about themselves, and/or others that firmly changed their lives ~ to them ~ forever. These stories involve things in life that are obviously constant, sometimes deadly, and 'to them' should always, and seriously be considered as profoundly important ~. AND relative to the story of Jesus.

heck (slang) is a form of hell, by the way...

Personal means I know Him and He knows me, it is an everyday ongoing thing. He talks to me thru his letter He left us and I talk to Him in prayer, without ceasing...

He personally does the thing all Fathers are required to do plus one........He laid down His life for me (personally) at the Cross.
