ian6868 you are wrong, now with most of the updates they check the keys to verify it is a valid legal copy of windows. Even if auto updates is on.
to find a valid key you will either have to by a legal copy of winxp or check the back, sides, bottom of your computer for a sticker with the xp key. if it is not a laptop - it might be on the inside of the case or case cover.

if u r using a original version do check with tool ..avaible obver microsft website- tool called genuine check ....
as this software will let u know whether u rusing original or duplicate version..
as windowsXP don't support invalid or pirated CD's for future upgrades..
