We just bought a house and are debating which is better, on grid with feed back, or totally independant. We live in a downtown type area, but are trying to be sustainable... has anyone gone through this, and what did you decide?

A grid tied solar system is the lower cost approach. There is no need for a battery storage system and/or a back up generator.
A stand alone (off grid) system has the advantage of operating even if the grid goes down but is more expensive.
A hybrid of these two systems is a stand alone system, with a two day battery storage, and a commercial battery charger. The PV panels charge the batteries. When the batteries get low the battery charger kicks in to recharge. Power from batteries goes to a couple of inverters and then to home circuit box. Better savings than a grid tied system and you have power even if the grid goes down.

Use a grid-tie. It doesn't cost much more but if you study your local laws, in most cases, the power company must pay you if you pump electricity back into the grid. Just be sure that you have a disconnect and that the power company can have access to it at all times. You are getting ready to spend a lot of money...the solar panels alone will cost well over 20 grand. Good luck.

Neither one. They are too costly and inefficient. At best, you only get 12 hours a day, on average, of sunlight. If you do buy, get tied to the grid. You are then almost guaranteed a regular supply of electricity. You can sell excess solar production back to the utility. If you go off the grid, you have to buy and maintain a roomful of batteries.

Generally speaking, an on-grid system will be much cheaper because you won't need batteries and will be eligible for state incentives and tax credits (see your installer or http://www.dsireusa.org for more info) An on-grid system is also more environmentally sound, since you won't be disposing of batteries and could potentially be supplying the grid during peak periods, cutting back on fossil fuel use and pollution emissions.
The only disadvantage compared to off-grid is that you still won't have power during an outage.

Off grid...
B/c you're in control of what goes on, so you may NEVER have to deal with a power outage LOL!
Also once it ALL pays its self off, you WILL have no Utility BILLS!
THat would be AWSOME!
(Hey can I come stay with yall a bit? I'm multi talented! I got off grid ideas, if only I could have or GET ... afford ... a HOUSE)
