Tell me everything you know about beauty school. Things have experienced. The entry test to get into beauty school. The people that are in it. The experiences you had after attending, and finding a job. Tell me anything you want plus more. Be as detailed as you'd like. I'm getting an AA in business and am thinking about opening a salon, which means...BEAUTY SCHOOL.

First, you don't have to be a licensed stylist to open a salon.. owners can be anybody.. only the managers and stylists have to be licensed.

There are no entry tests to get into beauty school. Most states require a high school diploma. Its not like a regular college where you take a placement test.. everything you know about hair is probably wrong.. and they know that.

Research the schools in your area. Find out about class size. Find out how many clients you will be working on daily once you are in the clinic area. I was impatient when I started because I was 22 1/2 years old and it takes about a year and I could only stay on my moms insurance until I was 24 if I was in school.. so I had to go right away. So I chose the school I could get into right away. Class sizes were about 25 students... which isnt too bad in the classroom.. However, this particular school started 5 full time and 3 part time classes a year.. when we went out to the clinic area, there were over 150 students all the time. For my entire first 2 weeks on the floor I only did one client.. not one client a day.. one client. They simply have too many students. Because of this, I only got to do one highlight the whole time I was there. Not really good experience. I also never got to do very many clipper cuts.. guys get their hair cut quite often, so they are good customers to have.. only doing 2 in 12 months didn't prepare me for my first day in a salon when I only had 2 women clients in an 8 hour shift.

So I went into a salon knowing as much as I did going into school. The school also only prepared us just enough to pass our state boards. So basically, I could do an "old lady" hair cut and a perm perfectly.

Fortunately for me.. I started out at Supercuts. Many people look down on "lower end" salons. Most people also don't know that "higher end" salons don't give you any training prior to putting you out on the floor. I had an interview at Haircuts Plus (I think they are exclusive to Michigan) which is a rather pricey salon comparatively.. and they said if I was hired, I would be working for 2 weeks before I had any training.. this scared me. It's one thing to work in a school..where people sign a waiver and you have a teacher to fix your mistakes.. but to just be thrown out into a salon on your first day is frightening. Supercuts.. along with Great Clips.. teaches you 9 haircuts. Any haircut anyone could possibly want can be done with those 9 cuts. Supercuts is an intense 5 day class where you will do every haircut about a million times. If you don't get it, you go thru the class again. It is really easy to catch on when you are new because you don't have bad habits yet. Great Clips gives you 3 days.. and not necessarily right away, but usually. In this class you do each haircut only one time and you practice on your clients in the salon.. but it is still better than having no idea what you are doing.

Supercuts also has a class called supercolor. I think you have to be working there for 3 months to take it, but color never clicked for me in school. I took this one day class and all of a sudden I understood what I was doing. They teach you how to know what to mix to get the color you want - My school didn't teach this, the teachers just told you what colors you wanted, not why. They teach you techniques that make your coloring process so much faster. I loved this class.
