Okay. I'm entering into a musical contest next month. It's a solo act, 1 song, only 90 seconds to sing it (can cut out a verse or something to make the song short enough). Must be sung a'capella. I spoke to a couple of the judges yesterday, and they are looking for 'known' peices (just meaning that they want to be able to recognize the song).

I'm 19 and have good breath control and diversity in dynamics. I can sing anything from tenor - soprano 1, and I like most every genre. Though, I do prefer to sing broadway music, or country.I'm just asking for opinions of what to sing. I've already gone through my list, and not liked any that I saw. And I'm looking at a couple that were already suggested, and really didn't seem to like any.
So, if you can think of anything that may fit the limits of the contest, I'd definitely appreciate any answers :)

Thanks!

I have been in many competitions like this one, and can definetley give you some advice. For only 90 seconds, don't go with something just because you like it. Go with it because you can sing it good. Don't do a song that is vulgar or anything, but i assume you already know that. Do a song the audience will know. Country is if'y; there's someone out there that absoluteley hates it and there's always someone's who's never heard of it because there is so much country out there. If you can, talk to the other contestants about what they are doing, just so you don't do the same song as someone else because they can compare it. Go with broadway. I have a range that's similar to the way you describe yours, and Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera is very good to do if you're strong on the cadenza at the end. Another is For Good from Wicked. Good Luck with the competition, and remember, no matter what you sing, always give 110%!

Sing what you know and love with all your heart!

My best audition was singing a Gregorian chant I learned in my all-girl Catholic high school. The audition went extremely well because I knew the piece backwards and forwards, could sing it unaccompanied and loved the piece with all my heart. The piece was totally off-the-wall for the situation, but I nailed it and got into the organization I was hoping to join.

Go with what you know and love. Remember, half of singing is technique but the other half is selling the song.

Sing something from RENT or Memories from CATS or Aida has really good music too.. . .

Or for Country sing something by Faith Hill she's really well known "Breathe" would be good, or "Concrete Angel" by Martina Mcbride. .. . . ahhh great stuff!
OR I HOPE YOU DANCE! thats a good one too!

Good luck and best wishes!
