I was at a country bar, Kodiac Jacks in Petaluma, CA late July and I put my purse in coat check but then kept my camera on hand. It was a brand nes SD 550 Cannon camera, so I figured it would be safer to hold on to it.

Later that night I ended up putting it in coat check, I handed it to the coat check girl who placed it into my purse (I saw it go in). Then later on when we were leaving I discovered it was missing.

I was told they would review the tapes and give me a call the next day. They didnt. I called the next day and was told they would look into it and then call me the following day. They also neglected to do this. Finally after about a weeks worth of calling they refered me to another man who has also neglected to call or return my phone calls.

They claim that only the employees have access to the coat check area. Does this mean they took it?

Im not as annoyed by having my camera stolen as by their extreemly uncooperative and unprofessional behavior.

Suggesions?

I would like to know how to deal with the people at the bar. They have not been helpful at all. How can I make sure that other people know about this? Do I ask to speak with the manager/owner and make a complaint?

This sounds more like you want some justice and revenge rather than your camera back. Chances are the person who stole your camera does this frequently. I would suggest hiring a lawer but this would be a futile and costly expense so I have a better idea, go to this store http://www.thespystore.com/wirelessvideo.htm
buy a wireless camera and place it in your purse. Making sure that the same person is working at the coatcheck have your friend check the purse in at the coatcheck. If the purse opens up and you see a face looking down at you, you have your culprit. Of course make sure you are recording this, you can always have a laptop in your car setup recording the signal. This is a relatively cheap trap and easy to setup, should only cost you $150. But the best part is that you will send this person to jail. I would suggest putting in a very expensive ring, or something else very tempting and expesive so that the charges will be felony theft. You could probably go on to sue the owners of the establishment as well.

Definitely talk to the manager. If it is a chain, call the corporate office. Tell whoever you talk to that you are going to file a police report, and/or hire a lawyer. Give them an incentive to help you out

Don't frequent country bars.
Don't leave your camera alone. Ever.

Other then that, buy a new camera. That one is long gone and no one there will help you, that's for sure!

Sorry.
