I am staying at a hotel in honolulu and we are debating whether or not we will need a car, why we are deciding against is because it will be so expensive because neither of us are over 25 so they will tack on an extra 25 a day! How is the public transit over there? About how much would we expect to pay for buses and taxis??

In terms of renting a car...would you recommend just walking around and using public transit instead? We may rent a car for a day just to drive around the entire island.

Pay the extra fee and rent a car for a day or two so you can visit the entire (most of it) of Oahu. You have visit Haleiwa, the North Shore, Makapu, and other great places.
For the rest of the trip, you can catch the bus. I would try to stay away from catching a taxi because it's expensive and the cost is going to be pretty close to renting a car if you take 2-3 taxi rides a day.

The public transportation is pretty decent. I haven't ridden the bus in a long time, but it goes to most places. There's even a bus that goes around the island.

I'm from Oahu and my friends and I went to the big island and we regretted not trying to rent a car but the big island is a lot bigger (hence the name) as for Oahu well we've been ranked as having the best public transportation in the country so you should be fine taking the bus just keep in mind that in town and the middle of the day it gets quite crowded. Renting a car for a day and going around the island as also a good idea and just use the bus the rest of the time. It's been about 3 years or so since I've used the bus so I don't know what the fares are anymore. I wouldn't recommend a taxi their way to expensive I only used one once the entire time I lived there (23 years) cause my friends and I were drunk (not really but we had been drinking and better safe then dead or arrested!) Good luck and have fun and if your going in august have a lot of sunscreen I hate Hawaii in August it's so freakin hot!!!

The bus system in Honolulu/Waikiki is so great that I wouldn't rent a car. I spent 2 months there and just used a buss pass. The bus system even has a 800 number you can call. Just tell them where you are and where you want to go and they'll get you there in one transfer!

As other posters have mentioned, it's $2 for the bus, or $20 for a 4 day pass. Buses along Ala Moana and Kalakaua run every 5-8 minutes or so, so there's always one on the way.

My friend rented a car when we went to Waikiki in January and the only time we really used it was when we went up to the Dole Plantation and North Shore. Traffic in Honolulu/Waikiki is horrible, epically during rush hour, and parking is almost nonexistent. There's almost nowhere, including most hotels, that you can park for free. We paid $10/night to park at our hotel.

Besides, you don't want to miss Kalakaua Ave at night. Shopping, restaurants, street performers, people. It's great and inexpensive fun.

Well Taxis have never seen many but it deoends on how far your traveling. Gas Prices are close to $4 now and well yes it can be expensive. Then the bus is one dollar for as far you may want to go. I say if you don't want a car then the bus is the best. But the whole renting a car to go around the island is a must have you won't get the same experiance with a taxi or a bus. Have fun while you here!!!!

If you are staying in Waikiki, you probably won't need a car. We were only there for 3 days, but we got along fine without a car. We got van service to and from the airport and took a tour with van service to Pearl Harbor. Other than that, we just walked everywhere.

Public transportation seemed to be pretty good. It's $20 for a 4 day vistors bus pass or $2 a ride on TheBus.

If your in Waikiki NO......don't bother. They have a good bus and shuttle system. They charge 7-10$ a nite at hotels to park. I would recommend though maybe doing a 2 day rental so you can do the North Shore, Water Park, and outlet mall. ..all of which are kinda far away. But I would not bother renting one for an entire week.

The bus system is quite good over there and you can get around to many places by bus. The monthly bus pass is like $40/mth. Each bus ride is like $2 and you can get one free transfer that you can use before it expires in a few hours. You can go to http://www.thebus.org for bus information there.

I would suggest buying thebus pass at any ABC store on Oahu!! You can rent bikes there if you need to!
The bus pass is only $20.00 for four consecutive days, and you can get on one bus, and do the circle island tour!! If you don't buy the bus pass, it is 2.00 every time you board a bus!!

I think you shouldn't. I think you shouldn't because you can get a really good tan and its really good exercise. If you do walk or ride a bike or something you might want to bring some sun screen.
