You don't say what kind of dog you have, some dogs are more suited to swimming than other breeds. I once thought all dogs could instictively swim but I found out there are some that can't. Some are just timid about water and are just happy to only stand in it, not get sprayed with water or swim in it. Since you would like to teach your dog you should just try coaxing it and do it in a loving way so it learns it can be a good thing and fun thing to do (use lots of praise, "good dog" when he does it). Throwing it in is not a good idea; if it really can not swim it will scare the dog and you and it could be more difficult to teach it then.

That's a bit odd, because to my knowledge, all dogs can swim, just by throwing them in, they dog paddle right away. But, if anything, just get in the water with her, and teach her as if you were teaching a human being, hold her from her belly, and have her paddle her own feet in the water, and little by little, start letting her go. It's simple. Good Luck

If your dog likes to play fetch, use a toss a ball or stick progressively further out into the pool. Eventually she will be swimming and not even realize it.
I had the same problem with my dog. However, things happened a bit differently. We have a greenbelt near our house with a river running through it. Long story short, we were playing fetch and she accidentally fell in. After a couple of seconds of panic, she figured out it was not that hard to keep her head above water. We had a hard time keeping her out of the water from that day forward.

Dogs don't learn to swim, it comes natural. Seriously throw your dog in the deep end and watch as he/she swims to the nearest edge to try and get out. They simply don't like it because they are unsure of how to get out, they can't just walk out like at the beach or lake. My dog is the same way. But he knows how to swim and I didn't teach him. So the question that you really should be asking is "how can I get my dog to like swimming in the deep end" and you can't. Let him/her go when ready

dogs inherently know how to swim, u don't have to teach them, you can swim out into the deep and have her follow. Make it positive by baiting her with treats or a toy. If you want to be safe u can buy her a doggy life vest. If you are taking her to the river make sure the current isn't to strong

Who in the world would just throw their dog in deep water????
A lot of dogs are scared and throwing them in the water isn't going to make them less scared. We actually got in the water with my dog (who was 90lbs at the time) and held her up while she practiced. We then took turns calling her to different ends of the pool, so she could practice.
She still will not jump in the water, but she will swim in deep water any chance she gets.

Dogs automatically try to swim once they are in water...Throw a ball in the deep end and then throw your dog in after it...A few times of this and your dog will be jumping in everytime there is a ball thrown or you get in...

They should just know how to swim. Just throw the dog in, and it tries to run...that is how they swim also. If it doesnt know better than to try running in the water, get ready for doggy style mouth to mouth

We have two dogs, one loves to swim in the pool, he is very good at it and looks like a pro...just swimming around with ease (he also has a tail).
Our other dog loves to jump in after balls and swim but is not very good at it, it always looks lie he is trying to save himself. He just keeps doing it though,,,still bad after all these years. He doesnt have a tail which we think relates to being able to swim. He doesnt have a rutter to steer or keep his butt afloat.
My inlaws have boxers and they put their feet in but dont like to swim at all...they look like they are saving themselves.
You can try the life vest thing, we have two for when we go to the lake or on the boat so they can swim longer without much effort. You can get in with your dog and hold her and let he go to the side. She just may not like to swim. Dont push her if she doesnt want to. You can throw a ball in the deep end she may get curious and go out there, just watch her.
It seems that dogs with long hair arent fond of swimming either. I have never seen a dog with out a tail swim good...maybe it is just my luck.
