My dog is a small hyper dog. When I come home from work she gets very excited and jumps and tries to lick me. Soon she calms down. I always thought this was natural for a hyper dog. And also that she could be trained to not jump. I have been told that she is a very bad dog. Is this true?

She continues with this behavior because it works. Try setting up a new ritual where you don't acknowledge her until you sit down on the couch AFTER you have come in and taken off your shoes.

No, your dog is not bad. She is just hyper and she is glad to see you when you come home from work every day. This kind of behavior is natural for a hyper dog. Your dog can be trained not to jump. You just have to work with her a little every day. Also it would be helpful if she had a walk every day and a place outside that was safe for her to play and run that was safe. Maybe you have a backyard or a side yard that you have already fenced off. If so, there should be a dog house, a water dish, a food dish, and some toys for the dog to play with. There should also be areas of sun and areas or shade and there should be areas of part shade/part sun if possible. Do not tie your dog out. This is cruel and it makes her feel abandoned. It can also change her personality. She will go from a friendly dog to a dog that is dangerous. Maybe in the evenings or early mornings, you can take her to walk or maybe some member of your family could do that. If she does not get some exercise, she will be a very unhappy dog. When you are teaching her not to jump you may want to contact a professional dog trainer or you may choose not to. Really, it is easy to train a dog not to jump. All you have to do is to tell them "No." Remember to tell them "No" everytime. Use the same word--either "No" or "Down" or "Get down" or "Get down and her name." Dogs pay more attention when they hear their name and then the command such as "Down, Lady!" (then after Lady gets down--"Good girl, Lady!!!). When your dog obeys you, remember to praise her to the skies. Also you can give her a special treat if she does especially good, but it is best not to rely on treats exclusivesly.

Once dogs are afew years old they usually calm down and as well having them fixed calms them down as well. Your dog is greeting you when you come home, what is bad about that? I would say that is natural for any dog. Yes, dogs can be trained not to jump up. My dog did that as well and still does when she sees someone she hasn't seen in a long time. They get excited like people do. She is NOT a bad dog. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners. Sometimes they will do things that aren't acceptable and it is up to the owner to teach them not to. It also takes time.

No she is not a bad dog just excitable and a good way to train them not to jump is ignore then when they are junping but as soon as they have all four feet on the ground reward them with plenty of praise, if they go to jump up again do the same.

No,she's not bad at all. That's a little dog thing.I have a bichion-frise and she does the same thing. If your dog starts choking/coughing while being excited it's common and it's caused by some type of body part they have in there throat .If your dog happens to pass-out in the middle of choking/coughing the vet has told me it's literally better for them because they com-down,and yes the dog will wake back up right away.90% out of 100 she's just happy and excited to see you.

You need to work with the dog - if it is bad it is not because of the dog - its a bad trainer.

Ignore the dog when she is jumping up and hyper - when she calms down - then you can praise her

You are right... Terriers do this sort of thing. The poor things are so small that they *have* to jump to feel closer to you! *lol* But, you are also right that they can be trained not to. When you come home, tell her to "sit" before you will pet her or give her *any* attention. If you do this every time, she will learn to sit right away when you come in, so she can be petted and praised.

But, don't be too surprised if she forgets sometimes... Especially when you have company. Terriers are also known for their shorter attention spans... ;) Be patient, be firm, but keep your sense of humor, and eventually, she will learn.

Best of luck to you!

no...it's not a bad dog. stop hanging out with your rich prissy friends. Dogs are suppose to get excited when it sees the person that feeds it, loves it, and takes care of it. I have a german sheppard and a black lab, they both jump up on my chest when I get home (they want to say hello, how are you, how was your day). Dont expect a dog to stand up and give you a kiss on both cheeks when you walk in the door, or shake your hand. trust me, there is nothing wrong with that dog.

no not a bad dog she is just happy to see you maybe if she had a fenced in yard that she could not get out of where she could run around and play then she might not be so hyper

Firstly, she can be trained not to jump.

Secondly, whoever told you that is a moron. A very bad dog would destroy your home while you were at work, not to mention leave you little "love puddles and chocolate mountains" for your viewing pleasure.

Lastly, there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

She's not bad. She just misses you and wants your attention. My dogs are hyper when I get home, but then calm down after they all get their love.
