I am a singer and have recently started taking voice lessons. First of all, make sure you have a GOOD voice instructor that really know what they are talking about because they can ruin your voice. But if you really want to improve your singing, taking voice lessons would be wise.
However, you will not get anything out of your lessons if you don't go in there with goals. At your first lesson, talk to your voice teacher about what you want to gain out of the lessons and any problems you want fixed with your singing. this way you both know what you're looking for and toward.

I took voice lessons for about 5 years. I don't think they helped much...at least not for how much it cost. The instructor just played the piano and stopped me if I hit the note wrong. Said to walk across the room on hard notes and would have me warm up with exercises typical to how choirs warm up.
I guess they could be helpful for someone experiencing trouble areas and wanting to make a career of singing. Really, it seems the most it offered was someone to get on your case when you haven't practiced....a friend can do that. It is probably good to point out that my voice lessons were in late middle school and early high school.

If you want to improve your vocal skills the best to do it is taking voice lessons. A good voice instructor, will listen to you, what your goals are, what type of music you would like to sing and if you want to do this seriously or just fur fun.
I read here some one was taking lessons for 5 years and she thinks is not worth it. Well I would say she did not have a good voice teacher or she were too young to understand the voice technical concpets. What a waste of time and money.
I would tell you to try more than one teacher, save enough money to try at least 3 different teachers, before to decide, compare aproaches and tecniques. Ask them everything you need to ask. A good teacher would always try explain to you everything you need to learn and understand about your voice technique.
Bad teachers can seriously hurt your vocal chords. Be sure your teacher is trained in voice technique, Some people call them selfs voice teachers, voice instructors or vocal trainers, but the true is, many of them don't have the real knowdlege about Voice technique and they cannot teach you to sing using the right muscles and breathing to create a healthy sound. I call them the voice killers.
If you are going to a voice Teacher is because you need to learn voice technique... If not, why you will pay for voice lessons?
Be aware, be smart and defend your voice of those voice killers. We cannot go to the Music store and buy a new pair of vocal chords. Unfortunately, it is impossible.
When you go for the first time to a voice teacher try everything she/he will ask you to do. Try your best. But at the same time, feel the signals in your body, you will need to sing as natural you can, if you feel pain, tension, or pressure in your chest or thorat muscles BECAREFUL that is not right.
You can read My 360's Blog "How to find the right Voice Teacher" Maybe that will help you to make a decision.

Good luck in your search.

Yes. They are definately worth it. I've taken them for a couple of years now and I have refined the quality of my voice. It's a lot of work because there's a lot involved in perfecting a piece like vowel shapes, notes, rythyms, text interpretation, and dynamics. A voice teacher will help with all of those aspects of singing.

You undero surgery, you take voice lessons :) And yes it is very worthwhile, and totally necessary. Never think about the money, the benefits of training with a professional singer go far beyond that.

Only if you have a good teacher who can communicate to you, specifically. Good voice teachers are few and far between so shop carefully. They are worth their weight in gold!

Yea I definitely think it's worth it, you'll improve by leaps and bounds. If you find a graduate student, usually they don't charge as much as a full-time teacher and they are just as good if not better.
