Poor thing...you must be aware that the average American is so ignorant when it comes to anything geographical. The fact that you ran into people that even know what Afrikaans is amazes me. Also, most dumb americans think that if you are white and african, you must be South African.

Your situation reminds me of a Hungarian who was trying to get a drivers license in Indiana. His knowledge of both spoken and written English was very poor, so he was accompanied by another Hungarian, Judit, who could translate for him. Judit told the testing official that her friend was from Hungary, Europe and asked if it would be OK to translate the written part of the test since his English was not good. The official said, "Oh, he's from Europe. Well, we can give him the test in Spanish." Judit again told the official that he was not from Spain but from Hungary.
"But he is from Europe, right?", the official asked and repeated,"We have a driving test he can take in Spanish."

you can be glad they think you talk Afrikaans (and after all what is your problem realy ?)
i am from SA, and most of the people where i am now think i was supposed to be black !!!
this is because the Media only covers what someone tell them to, and nobody know the truth - if you are Afrikaans, be proud about it - !

The cultural blindness that is so common in the US. This happens for the same reason USers think that if one speaks Spanish one has to be Mexican, or else.

A little touchy are we? So what if they ask you if you speak a language native to that continent? God forbid anyone ask anyone about their culture and actually learn anything new, might offend someones little feelings. Get over it.

Hello,

You have to be specific, if you are caucasian or in other words white, they already know about your white heritage they want to know about your life ...alot of people caucasian have to go through the same thing.

It better than people saying why don't you go back to your country...isn't it...?
