The Vietnamese language is one of the Mon-Khmer languages of the Austro-Asiatic language family. As such, it developed out of Proto-Mon-Khmer when that ancient language began to split up into different dialects and then different languages. Proto-Austro-Asiatic, the ancestor of Proto-Mon-Khmer was probably spoken in extreme southern China about 6-8 thousand years ago. The Austro-Asiatic languages reach from northeastern India to the Malay Peninsula and north into southeastern China.
