If you haven't booked your flight yet, may I suggest you fly out on the Sunday early morning flight. This flight (with United in my case) is usually virtually empty and therefore you can usually get yourself a row of seats all to yourself to stretch out on.
If you plan to sightsee I suggest a very sturdy, comfy and worn in pair of quality walking shoes as you will do a lot of walking!
Don't be afraid to ask for help in any situation, despite what you see on the TV, I found the NY people and especially the NY police to be very friendly and helpful.
Go and see a Broadway show, then show off about it when you get back (saw Chicago while I was there... fantastic!).
Spend a day wandering up and down 5th Avenue, I hate to say it, but it is a far superior shopping experience to Oxford Street or anywhere else in London for that matter.
If you are getting a Taxi from the airport ONLY use one of the official yellow cabs from the taxi rank, really, this is a serious piece of advice (a colleague of mine was ripped off at gunpoint by an unofficial cab!)
Visit Grand Central Station... magnificent!
I'll add more as I remember it!

Don't waste money on a cab from the airport use the public transport or a shuttle bus (if you're flying into JFK the desk is in the lobby by arrivals). Don't pay full price for Broadway shows - it's SO easy & quick to use the TKTS service in Times Square so don't be put off by the queues. If you want to do the sights get an all-inclusive ticket from one of the tour companies eg, Gray Line. You'll get to visit everywhere with a tour guide & it's also valid for Circle Line cruises & you can normally spread it over a couple of days.
Most importantly, be really nice to the concierge as soon as you arrive. One decent tip & they'll help you for the rest of your stay. It really doesn't have to be expensive!

Visit Woodbury Common for really cheap clothes with more than half taken off the normal prices. Get a bus from Port Authority in Time Square.

before u go list all the things u want to do see if any of them are in the same area example if you want to go to the 9/11 site make sure you go to the church opp and century 21 is there too, u can waste alot of time by not planning, go to the rocker-fella centre, great view of Central park, and my favourite was the tenement building museum on east side and then go to katz deli for a fantastic sarnie and a look back in time, i could go on forever as i loved my visit just recently.......have a good time and remember plan!

NYC lacks public restrooms. Try to find a restaurant or use it at home before you go out.
