Hi J Russell,
I take you question seriously. While all religions have different philosophies about what a soul is I will write about what I think you are asking. Allow me to make an assumption that you have a loved one who either had a child born without a brain or someone whose brain is deteriorating. You may then ask the question "Will this person go to heaven?" Or maybe a fetus aborted without the developed brain does not have a soul and thus is not a person. Or finally, if a prson cannot think then they do not have a soul.
In either case, the organized religions do not require a brain to be present in order for there to be a soul. The very nature of the separation of body and soul is the point of instructing practitioners of a faith that regardless of what happens to thier body, thier soul is what matters. Your particular faith will facilitate you in dealing with a particular situation. But the brain and soul are separate in that one is concrete and the other abstract.
I hope this helps you.

Nobody HAS a soul.
We ARE a soul.
Like years ago when you entered town there was a sign referring to the population:
10,000 souls ....people!
And yes, a soul (a person) can be without a brain ....although its a bit ugly and of short duration.

No.
The brain requires the body in order to function. Similarly, the soul requires the brain to contain the memories and experiences that are the fundamental component of the soul.

There is no evidence that a "soul" exists in anyone. It's superstitious crap, really. Science tells us that all your personality and thought are housed in your brain. When your brain ceases, so does the concept that is "you." No part of the human body is eternal. Souls do not exist.

I going to assume you are of a christian faith, so will answer on that assumption. God created man, and every man has a soul. The brain is only part of the genetic-organ part of the body. Therefore, a definate YES!
