It's right across the river. Go over the 14th Street bridge on I-395, take the Highway 1 exit and you're in Crystal City. The Theodore Roosevelt bridge (I-66/US 50) from Constitution Ave. and Key Bridge (US 29/Lee Hwy) from Georgetown go to Rosslyn. The Memorial Bridge runs from the Mall and takes you to Arlington National Cemetery and VA-110, which will take you to either 395 or 66, since it is in the middle between the two. You can also access the George Washington Parkway from there, which will take you to Washington National Airport, also in Arlington, though Highway 1 will do the same. In fact, Arlington was part of D.C. until the late 1800s when the federal government gave it back to Virginia thinking it would never need that much space (we see how well that worked out).
But why go by car? Each of the places I just mentioned has a Metro stop, and you won't have to deal with traffic. At present Arlington has more Metro stops than any county outside of DC, and it is served by the Blue, Yellow and Orange lines.

I used to live in Arlington. It's about 5-6 mi. from DC. Just the other side of the Potomac River. It definitely is NOT 30-40 minutes away.

Depends how much traffic there is. Usually about 45 minutes. However, if it is during rush hour, you might want to leave yourself about an hour and a half.
