It doesn't exist

You know that people will give you all sorts of Bible passages, all of which most people, who support abortion, will pass off and not accept. It's all about what you believe is inside of the mother and how much you think that life has a shot at living. All the Bible quotes in the world won't change a person's mind if they believe the mother has the right to end the life of her child. I've heard all the arguments, and they don't hold water. That baby isn't just a blob of matter, or a collection of cells, or any other adjective they throw around, all designed to demean and make small the miracle that that baby is. I fail to see why it's right to end a baby's life just because the mom doesn't want that little one. What makes that life any less than after the birth? If it's murder when the baby is one month old, why isn't it murder before? Does life only mean something as long as the person draws breath? This has nothing to do with Christianity, as I think that Muslims have the same views on life, as do other people. It has everything to do with how you look at life, and who has the right to give and take it. I've heard many people get upset when teenagers keep getting pregnant, saying that those girls should be sterilized for bringing so many "unwanted" children into the world. They set themselves up as judge & jury, instead of finding out why these girls continue to do this and making a difference in their lives. It's just easier to kill it, sterilize it and it's all better, right? No, not right. The behavior doesn't go away, and will just come out in other destructive ways (like booze, drugs & prostitution). People who haven't gotten involved in the lives of those who are going through difficulties don't know the deeper issues. Yes, I know people who've gotten abortions. Did it stop the problem for them? No, it didn't, and actually made things much worse. For many of these girls, their life is still a mess, 30 years later. The amount of girls actually getting abortions due to rape, incest and medical reasons are so very slim. In every case I personally know of, it was done in fear. Fear from parents, fear of the father knowing, or fear of not continuing to have the freedom that they had. Those are not good enough reasons to kill someone who didn't ask to be brought into the world to someone so thoughtless. There are resources available to give this child to someone who would be more than grateful to be a parent. You see, my daughter-in-law cannot have children of her own, due to a medical situation. How do you think she feels, knowing that millions of babies a year are "disposed" of, yet she may never know the joy of having one grow inside of her? All the arguments in the world don't matter to these innocent human beings who are treated like an inconvenience. And just because you asked for it, here are some verses to considered: Psalms 10:8, "He (the wicked) sitts in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places does he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor". Deuteronomy 27:25, "Cursed be he that takes reward (payment) to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen". Exodus 23:7, "Keep you far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay you not: for I (God) will not justify the wicked". And I'm sure that many on here will remind you of the place in the 10 Commandments about not killing (which is murder with intent to end life, which IS killing). I hope this helps. <*)))><

There are no verses in the Bible that specifically address abortion. Obviously abortion was not an issue in the day and age the Bible was written. However, Pslams is full of verses that talk about how God "knit us together in our mother's womb.." and how he knew us before we were born, while we were "formed in secret.." It is clear throughout these passages that life begins at conception and that a fetus is a person in the eyes of God. Life is precious to God and that is found throughout the Bible. So taking of that life is killing, murder and it is wrong. Putting the Bible aside, any doctor will tell you that within just a short time after conception (days) the fetus has a heartbeat and a brain. Most people won't talk about this because they want you to think that a fetus is just a bunch of tissue. From the tone of your question, you already know that abortion is wrong, you just want to pick a fight.

Abortion didn't exist, at least as a term, in the time of the Bible. There is the passage in the Old Testament where upon fleeing Egypt Moses tells his followers, "If thou shouldst truly love thine children thou should smash their heads upon the rocks." This kind of supports abortion as Moses is essentially saying that killing these children abruptly is more humane than allowing them to starve to death in the desert. That's about the closest that either testament gets to abortion.

As for those who put, 'Thou shalt not kill'. I'm sorry but you are SO wrong. In Biblical times people had no idea what an embryo or a fetus was. That was discovered much later by those people you Christians hate so much... scientists. Moreover, in that time they *actually* followed the word of god... you know "Thou shalt not judge" and all.

It should also be noted that the Bible does not mention homosexuals except in one very suspect passage from the Apocryphal texts. If you don't know what those are you should stay out of Bible discussions, but suffice it to say that the early Christians saw these books as 'Bible fan fiction' although they are now unfortunately amongst the most quoted and followed bits of Christian doctrine. Christians, please stop just using your Bible to hide your money and actually read it. You might just learn what Jesus *actually* commanded you to do... I'll give you a hint - it has nothing to do with homosexuals or abortion.

Proverbs 6:16-17 "God hates... hands that shed innocent blood." How can any be more innocent than the unborn?

Exodus 21:22-24 If men fight and strike a pregnant woman and hurts or kills the unborn, the penalty (under the Law of Moses) was to be "an eye for an eye".

At what point does the unborn become a person with a soul? James 2:26 says, "...the body without the spirit is dead..." As long as the body, no matter how small, is alive (growing, moving, etc.) it has a spirit (soul).

According to Jeremiah 1:5, a person can be known (by God) even before they are born.

A person is a person, no matter how small. Killing a person is murder.

There is a passage where the Lord says he knows us before we are even born. Indicating that everyone, even fetuses (feti?) has a purpose. And that even before we are born, we can be known, have a future, etc. The bible also says thou shalt not kill. In otherwords, dont kill. Pretty much, having sex means you are risking having a child, no matter how careful you are. If you arent mature enough to raise a kid and take responsibility for your actions, you arent mature enough to have sex. But the Lord says dont judge, so make your own decisions. The sick thing is, over 3,000 babies are killed every day. 3,000! Its almost like a necessary evil. Imagine the population if 3000 extra people were born a day. Imagine the foster care system with all those babies that people were too pathetic and immature to take responsibility for. Imagine how many women would shove hangers up in them if they couldnt get an abortion, and take their own life as well as another. I dont think its justifiable, but its just one of those things we cant change. If you do it, youre the one who has to live with yourself. We all started out as just those two cells, and it only takes a couple weeks for those cells to start looking like a person and have a heart, etc. If you are for abortion, at what gestational age does it stop being ok to kill that baby? Is it ok to kill them right before birth? Would you kill a newborn? How can we possbily decide at what age a baby is a "human being"? They are people in the making with a future and a life the second they are conceived. Otherwise, when a woman gives birth, her baby wouldnt be a "real person". And what is so wrong with adoption? Are some of you so selfish that you wont take responsibility for your actions and dont want to screw up your body? Is that all you are worried about? Let that baby have a chance. You did.

First, Moses didn't write "Thou shalt not kill." Allegedly God wrote that. Secondly, most scholars believe it actually said "Thou shalt not murder." There is a difference. If you forbid murder but not killing, it lets you kill people if you're in a war, for example. But this doesn't apply to abortion at all, because it's talking about people who have already been born. The passage about God knowing someone in the womb is what's always used in this argument. Meanwhile, the bible absolutely says you shouldn't eat pork and can have slaves, among many other things most people ignore, but you don't see those quotes getting thrown around quite as often these days, do you?
And, Brooke, here's the flaw in your argument: you mention the 3 classes of life. You don't put an unborn baby in any of them because it's not yet born and is therefore not yet alive. You don't have seeds or eggs mentioned in there, do you?

Slate.com is blogging the Bible. There is a passage that says if someone pushes a woman and causes her to miscarry but doesn't cause the woman real injury, then he only has to pay some type of fee.

Abortion comes down to the reasons. Is it stupid to not use birth control out of irresponsibility and then get an abortion - yes, maybe, who knows depending on what the future would hold and we cannot.

But I have major problems telling an 11 year old who was raped by her father that she shouldn't be entitled to one, or people in other difficult situations.

That is why I think it should remain legal. If you start to put restrictions on it, then you invade the privacy of people in situations where you have no right to impose your judgment upon them - especially when you are not in their shoes.

Also, everyone is talking about life for life...but, If Thou Shalt Not Kill, then how can you take life for life.

The writers of the Bible probably believed that people would become so evil to the point where they can actually allow someone to scoop out something in a woman's body. I never thought I would see the day when a woman would actually do that. I want everyone who is pro-abortion to think about their mothers having an abortion when she was pregnant with them. DO NOT tell me that it is not a person yet, what else could it be?? Fat growing inside of you???????? It makes me sick that anyone would believe that abortion is okay! Whether it is in the Bible or not.

Would that make it an indisputable fact? Just use common sense and see that from the perspective of the unborn child it is being murdered when aborted. Sometimes though abortion happens to be the best of bad choices. Don't think that anyone would do an abortion for the fun of it.

The question here, and the reason why the matter hasn't been settled, is because people can't agree on whether a fetus is a human life yet or not, and if it should be treated and protected as such

According to the Bible, "God created only three basic classes of life, each of which reproduces after its own kind: plants, animals, and people. (Gen. 1:11,12,20-25,26-30; 5:1-4). In which of these three categories should a living, unborn baby be classed? It cannot be considered plant or animal because plants and animals reproduce after their own kind. It is the result of human reproduction, and humans are distinct from the plants and animals. Therefore the life in the womb of a human mother must necessarily be human!"

Only you can answer the question, because only you can decide whether a fetus is a life or not TO YOU. No one else can make the decision for you.
