You really shouldn't put him outside during the day while your gone and not being able to watch him.if you want him to be a inside outside cat you need to introduce him a little at a time. Why would you want him outside anyway? All kinds of things could happen to him. if any other males are around they will attack him,and hurt him maybe even kill him. Cats are very territorial. and if you adopt from an agency you will have to sign a paper stating the he will be kept inside.

I never understood people who found it acceptable to allow their pets to roam outside. The dangers are limitless. Your cat could be hit be a car, attacked by another animal and be seriously injured or contract rabies, could eat and ingest something that could kill him, or be picked up by someone else to go an unknown horrible fate, like sold to a lab for experimentation or even be tortured and hurt by some neighborhood kids. It is irresponsible to allow your cat to be outside and I sincerely hope that you do not do that or at the very least get a dog instead. At least the dog will stay in a fenced yard. Hopefully you at least have that. Please don't let your cat outside. Check out the aspca or humane society websites. I'm sure you will find the same advice there that most of us are telling you here!

I agree with everything Nancy Kay said. Keep him inside. The average life span of an outdoor cat is 2-3 years. He may also end up in cat fights, get ear mites, get dirtier. Depending on where you live, he may also get ticks. He may get heat stroke or suffer from extreme cold. Make sure that if you do let him out that he is fixed, has his rabies shots and other vaccines.
To get a cat used to being outside, you should go out with him for short periods. Allow him time to sniff around and thoroughly explore his world. Over a couple of weeks he will become familiar with his home, territory and will know where to come home to.
But please reconsider. Cats are very independent creatures. They don't mind being left alone inside. With a clean litter box, fresh food and water inside, your cat will be very comfortable while you are away.

You never leave a cat outside. That is borderline abuse. It could be killed or pick up a disease. He could be hit by a car......
If you don't want him in the house, please don't adopt him. That is like getting a dog and tying him to a dog house in the back yard. Great life. What does the cat do if a storm comes up? What does the cat do if some nasty kids decide to chase him for fun and beat him with sticks? What if you come home and he is laying in the middle of the street dead after being hit by a car?
What if someone picks him up and sells him for animal parts?
See what I mean?
I just don't understand.
RANDY D: How can you tell someone to abuse their animal and then say God Bless you?

Don't let the cat be outside, he's supposed to be indoors. He can go out when he wants to, but most of the time he must remain at home. Don't get the cat if you're to leave him outside, he's better off with someone else.

You have to train him. Let him out to explore (with your supervision) a little more each day. Make sure you keep the door open to your home so that he feels he has an exit back to his comfort zone. BTW you have to get him used to your home first. He has to make it his home first and know the scents there before you let him out. There is a lot of information online on how to train your cat.
I agree that you should be aware of the dangers cats face when you leave them outside. They could get injured, killed by cars, and exposed to various illnesses. If you insist on letting your cat outdoors, get your cat the latest vaccinations. Cats do get bored kept indoors, but if you leave him a wide array of cat toys, and play with him when you are home, then he should be fine.

He needs to be confident, unafraid. That's why they run away. Don't cut his nails, whatever you do! Make him comfortable with outdoor surroundings and sounds. Take him around your house and yard, but most of all, make sure he gets frightened by loud noise and large autos. That'll keep him within the house's perimeter. They'll hang out where ever they have their own food or access to it (including birds). Sit outside where it is quiet and safe-feeling to him, and kick it out there every day, or evening. This way, he'll be used to it. Cats will walk if there's no food, so make sure you feed him (and only him). Other strays will locate his meal and eat it themselves.

I don't let my cats outside. If you are concerned about leaving him out there then I would say either get him a cat door or don't put him outside.

He should only be let outside if he has front and back claws. Otherwise, he wont be able to defend himself or climb a tree to excape danger. Try to be outside with him, but bring him in when you go in. You may find that he ends up getting hurt in a fight or hit by a car otherwise.
