It cannot, because souls do not exist, even in living things.

A human embryo is a creation of God, and God intends that all humans have souls---this is a fundamental part of the human make up. Because having a soul means life and not having a soul means death, it reasons therefore that we start with a soul at conception. An embryo demonstrates all of the characteristics of life. Jesus loves you.

An embryo is a soul. People are souls and animals are souls.
Genesis 2:7_"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Revelation 16:3 _"And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea." The New International Version translates this verse_"The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead man, and every living thing in the sea died."
People do not have souls, thay are souls.
A soul eats_ " Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people." Leviticus 7:27
A soul is not immortal--it can die__"The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." Ezekiel 18:20

First of all, "SOUL" in the Bible, is define as & is translated from the Hebrew ne´phesh and the Greek psy·khe´. Bible usage shows the soul to be a PERSON or an ANIMAL or the life that a person or an animal enjoys.
The Bible shows that the Creator himself is lovingly aware of the developing human embryo or fetus. As King David said: “My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret. . . . Your eyes saw even the embryo of me, and in your book all its parts were down in writing.”
“O Jehovah, you have searched through me, and you know me. . . . You kept me screened off in the belly of my mother. I shall laud you because in a fear-inspiring way I am wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, as my soul is very well aware.”-(Psalm 139:1, 13-16)
According to God’s law given through Moses the developing human fetus or embryo was considered a life or soul.
God declared: “In case men should struggle with each other and they really hurt a pregnant woman and her children do come out but no fatal accident occurs, he is to have damages imposed upon him . . . But if a fatal accident should occur, then you must give soul for soul.” (Ex. 21:22, 23)

Dull matter does not create life. Even our own bodies without the soul cannot live. So how can an embryo not have a soul. How can anything that contains life not have a soul?

The three aspects of life for sentient creatures are body, mind, and soul. To have a mind, you must have a body to support it. Likewise, to have a soul, you must have a mind to develop and contain it.
A soul is the essence of your personality. It is the product of all your experiences and learning in life.
At the very earliest stages of life, humans do not have a mind and hence do not have a soul. A zygote is only one cell and it isn't a brain cell. It has no soul.
Later in pregnancy, the story has completely changed. The brain does not instantly appear at the moment of birth. It slowly develops over months. Once it begins to form, how can you designate the precise moment that the soul is first present? It isn't really possible.
Creating stem cells from soulless zygotes is not immoral. When abortion is deemed absolutely necessary, it should be formed as early in the pregnancy as possible. Aborting a six-month old fetus is just as immoral as committing infanticide after the child is born.

Ask yourself these things:
What is it that gives us life?
What does it mean to have a soul?
Is there a difference between the two?
How precious are these things to me?
How can we determine when something has been given these things?
Do I have the right to make a decision that affects someone else, whether that someone be a new life or older, regarding these issues?
Is the information I am using about these things correct? How does the place or person where I got the information know for sure?
When you are sure, REALLY sure, you know the answers then make your decisions based on your conclusions.
To me life is precious. All life. Some things that affect it we cannot control, some we can, some we have no natural right to affect others. That is the burden of having free will.
My answer: I do not know
and therefore I make my decisions accordingly. I have to live with these decisions.

Biologically, the human being is created when the sperm joins to the egg and fertilization takes place. This moment is also called "conception."
Theologically, God infuses the immortal soul into the newly-created Human Person at the moment of Conception. This means that the TINY baby (to use a non-biological term for simplicity) has a soul that is immortal (will never die) and if killed, at any point in its life, that soul will be subject to the four last things: death, judgment, heaven, and hell. This is explained fully in the catechism of the Catholic Church: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P2L.HTM and the subsequent pages.
Furthermore, theology tells us that only human beings have souls, and that no other created being (besides angels) have souls.

The Hebrew word is 'Ne′phesh' ....Hebrew being the language of the OT.
Nephesh is from a root meaning “breathe."
In a literal sense it can be rendered “a breather.”
Koehler and Baumgartner’s Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros (Leiden, 1958, p. 627) defines it as:
“the breathing substance, making man and animals living beings . . . soul = living being, individual, person.”
Its not that it HAS a soul, but it IS a soul.

The answer is that we don't really know at what point a person has a soul. The psalmist writes to God, "You knit me together in my mother's womb" "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." There are all sorts of ideas about when "life" actually begins, but the truth is that only God knows for sure, and that is why those who believe in God choose not to leave the answer to that question in His hands.
